So my year old American Bulldog keeps eating things in the backyard. He played tug of war with my hose and broke the spigot and PVC pipe so by the time I got home I had a damn lake in my side yard, he ate through the fence so he could get a piece from the dog next door (can't really be to mad about that) but now he is digging in my flagstone and sand patio and eating the invisible edging. Anyone have any ideas about how to keep him off and out of places I don't want him? Thanks.

Kevin

get him tons of bones and toys, spray them down with beef broth.

here's what i did to keep my dogs out of the trash when they were pups:

got some of the hottest damn hot sauce i could find (i mean serious serious sauce), and would feed them a little bit (it's funny too!). after a few times of that, they learned their lesson and wouldn't go near my finger when they smelled that hot sauce on it. as soon as they associated that smell with their mouths being on fire, i watered some down and sprayed it on top of the trash. they never pulled the trash out again.

great idea

get him fixed!

Hell no! I'm gonna pimp him out in the fall. Gotta recoup some of the money I dish out for him. Seriously though, I think I'm gonna try the hotsauce thing. What kind did you use?

x2 on the hotsauce, worked on my boxer and shepherd to stop them from eating my tires. Good luck, Bulldogs love to chew and destroy.

picked up some hotsauce w/ habanero's he didnt appreciate it when I put some in his mouth.

This is the original hottest sauce in the Universe and our best seller. In fact, it is the only sauce ever banned from the National Fiery Food Show.

Funny my american Bull wasn't nearly as bad. He did have a thing for my wifes panties. He would literally eat them and I would find them in the yard once they came out. I was going to stud mine too but I think I am too picky.

Not to burst your bubble or say anything is wrong with your dog... but all dogs are not created equal. A good pedigree (or a high price) doesn't mean that all pups in the litter are equal. You should only put your dog out to stud if your breeder says he's good enough and your veterinarian says he's healthy. American Bulldogs must be screened for hip dysplasia and often the screening doesn't take place until a dog is almost two years old. I also believe females are typically not bred until they reach at least 18 months and have been through two heat cycles. Your dog should have a good temperament and right now it sounds like, at the very least, he's desperately in need of training and exercise. If you're set on doing this, please do it responsibly... for the betterment of the breed.

Spend time with him, give him exercise, obedience training, socialization and love.

trailhugger, i appreciate your concern and advice but I'm not the guy on the side of the road selling "purebred" dogs just to make a buck. My dog has a digging problem. I work with him every morning before work and everyday after work. I've talked with the breeder in depth about putting him to stud. On a side note, does anyone enter in the weight pulling contest's? I'd like to go to one and see what its all about.

just getting your money back is a pretty lame reason to create more dogs in a world that already has way too many, but whatever. it sounds like you've already been irresposible enough with him that he's gotten out to another dog.

anyway, my opinions aside, getting him fixed afterwards will help alot. i guarantee he's killing any sort of plants/flowers you have with marking also, and it'll help that too. other than that, the hot sauce trick that's been mentioned works great. most pet stores also carry sprays specifically made to keep animals away from and off things. hot sauce it much cheaper though.

You are right. yeah I was irresposible to keep him in my back yard that has a 6 ft. high wodden fence. I should have known he would chew through the fence to get to the dog that was in heat. Maybe I should do what the neighbors do with their dog and keep him chained down 24/7. At least he couldn't chew anything up.

maybe the chain? just messing. If you are excersising him and everything like you said you are, I would just assume he is being a playful pup, but I don't know much about raising dogs. I had a few as a kid but my parent's did most of the work. I was on poop duty, feeding, walking, playing but just did as I was told. I had a lab who would always chew through electrical cords, mainly the extension cord running to the pump on our above ground pool. I guess he either never got shocked or just didn't care. I think we went through 3 before we started replacing just the ends and we went through about 4 of those.

I had a pit that would chew everything inside and out. I tried hotsauce on stuff like the trash etc but it never phased him. The best thing I ever did was get a kong and freeze peanut butter inside of it. Even got to the point Id dangle it from a tree tied up and he would go nuts until he would fall over tired. Only other suggestion is wear his ass out if you see him doing it. Popping him after he's done it doesnt do any good but make him scared of you.

anyone that knows anything about dogs knows a male will do CRAZY things to get to a female in heat that's blocks away, much less next door. i've heard alot wilder things than chewing through a fence. a friend of mine's male crashed through a glass storm door to get to a female that was two blocks away in a garage.

if this is a recent change, that might be his whole problem, trying to get to her. one of you needs to take the initiative and keep your dog inside until it has passed. usually most people feel the responsibility lies on the owner of the female in heat to keep her up, but if they're not going to step up you should imo.

what are your plans for the puppies he might have already made?

He went through the fence 5 or 6 months ago and she still looks the same. I'm hoping him digging in my new patio is just because its a new thing that he will get tired of like he does with the rest of his toys but I've been giving him the hotsauce treatment and I sprayed it on my patio last night. As of this morning there was no digging in it.
I don't think my neighbors would even notice if she had pups. She was a really good looking blue and white pit that they keep chained in the back. A few months ago I was building a new fence (not just because he ate part of mine but it needed it) and they had a 5 gallon bucket for water but it had been tipped over for a day or so and had not given her ay food or water for at least the time that I was there. I filled it up every other day for a week until my fence was done. Some people suck.
