yup i just came back 109->49->64 this past weekend. you can also do the US 1 South to 15/501 to 24/27 and then take a right at the BP and what used to be the Uwharrie Sportsman
Take 64W to 220S (past 220 business). Go south on 220 to the Troy/Ulah exit. Go right at the bottom of the off ramp, go about 200 yards and turn left onto 134. Follow 134 into Montgomery Co. After the Montgomery Co. sign go 1.5 miles to the 134 Country Store and turn right onto Abner Rd. Follow Abner Rd. 1.5 miles and turn left onto Flint Hill Rd. Flint Hill Rd. ends at Ophir Rd. Go left and it will end at the old Mullinex Store on 109. Turn right and cross the Uwharrie River up the hill and turn left at the sign to hunt camp.
That's the short cut... drive it almost everyday. If you're pulling a trailer it may not be so good. The last leg of Flint Hill Rd. is narrow and curvy. But for regular vehicles it's a nice drive.
I live right off Western Blvd, that's the way I always go. I rolled out with a buddy of mine one time I-85 to US-220 etc, then we came back the other way and he even said 64 was faster.
If you are towing I think the general opinion is that the highway is best. 64 gets really annoying in spots with the constant up and down of speed limits, but since it is 4-lane all the way to NC49 it's not a bad drive. Lots of State Troopers!
