I hear the terms Dana 30, Dana 44 and so forth. How would I check to find out what I have on my TJ? Also, is it marked somewhere so I can find out my front/rear gear ratios as well? Thanks.

If you don't have a rubicon and have stock axles, you have a Dana 30 front.
If your rear axle looks like this, it's a dana 35:

If it looks like this, its a dana 44:

Regarding the gear ratio, there should be a tag on your diff that states the gear ratio. If it is no longer there, the factory options for TJ's are:

3.07 - 1997-2006
* Standard ratio used with 6 cyl models except the Rubicon

3.55 - 1997 only
* Optional ratio used with 6 cyl manual only

3.73 - 1998-2006
* Optional ratio used with 6 cyl manual and automatic except the Rubicon
* Standard ratio used with most 4 cyl automatics
* Standard ratio used with 4 cyl 6 speed
* Standard ratio used with Dana 44 rear axle except the Rubicon

4.10 / 4.11 - 1997-2006
* Standard ratio used with 4 cyl 5 speed manual
* Standard ratio used with Rubicon

4.56 - 2003-2006
* Optional ratio used with 4 cyl automatic

If your TJ is stock and not a Rubicon model, its gonna have a D30 front. Rear is probably a D35, but could have been ordered with a D44.
They do put tags on the that show the ratio, bit over time can fall off, or get lost during lube changes, etc. On the D30, the tag is between 2 diff cover bolts on the LH side. The ratio is the first number on the second row.
Compare your front axle cover to the rear. If the rear is a lot bigger, its a D44. If its a small oval, its a D35. There are pics online showing the different diff. covers.

Thanks everyone. I managed to find the original window sticker and it says Dana 44 with 3.73 Gears. But I am very glad to actually know how to look at it and tell. Also, since I have the D44 w/ 3.73, does that mean I have a D30 up front with 3.73 or what? Thanks in advance.

OK, thanks. One more thing, If I change my gears in the back, I have to change them to match up front, in order for the 4x4 to work, correct?

Thanks Everyone for all your help. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I learn the ins and outs of owning a 4x4 TJ.
