Fuel cell vent

This weekend after about an hour or two of riding I noticed my fuel cell was bulging. About 30 seconds later gas syphened(sp?) up my vent tube and began gushing out of my breather. I turned off the Jeep and opened the filler cap to let the pressure escape. My cell does contain foam, and I figure it maybe was blocking the vent. However for gas to run all the way up to the tube there is no way it would have been in the way. Just running a simple AN fitting from Alliance with some tube attached and a cheapo autozone breather. Runs up to the roll cage pillar behind passenger seat if that helps at all. Tank was relatively full of gas when it happened. Anybody have any suggestions

Sounds ignorant but im not sure on the line size of the vent, just some a buddy had laying around. I'm running the stock YJ sending unit in the cell, no regulator or rail. Its the stock line that has been re routed through the tub to the sending unit which is now in the cell which connects to stock pump.

Well its not kinked or anything like that, and it should be nice and clear now if anything was in it, bc the gas surely would have pushed it out. I should probably change the line anyways, wouldn't hurt. Anything else?

what kind of cell is it?

do you have any unused connections left?

I know somebody that did something similar, and had the vent hooked to the return line (or some kind of mix-up)...where it wasn't even vented because the connector the vent line was hooked to had a tube that ran to the bottom of the tank instead of allow the air at the top to vent out...

I know on my RCI aluminum cell that there are three ports, and I only needed to use one of them...

Pull the fill cap, blow on the vent tube. If it bubbles it's on the wrong one. if it just puchs air easy should be on the right one. What do you have on the end of the vent?
My J-Truck would build up pressure if I got gas on a cool/cold evening, filled it to the max, and then it sit out in the heat of the day. Our Honda will do the same thing, except it pushes it out the filler cap

the F-250 I had did the same thing...had dual tanks (was originally a diesel) and the rear tank had no vent...

fill it up, let it sit in the hot sun, and you'd better back up when you released the cap...I ended up just not tightening it down all the way, and sold the truck before I drilled a hole in the filler neck to vent it...

worst time was when I was out of town, and left it at the office for a few days...during that streak of ~100F days...and I got a call saying it was dumping fuel all over the parking lot...built so much pressure it busted the rubber line between the hard line and the fuel pump, and left about a 8' diameter spot on the asphalt, which is still there 6 months later...:D

You'll get the same result when a Fuel cell is improperly installed, choose your connections wisely when selecting from the 3 on top of an RCI cell. IE: do not connect to the pickup.

Old man voice:
"Uh, who's jeep is that outside in the parking lot?!?!? It's got gas flowing out of it all over the place!

Me shaking my head:
"That's mine.":shaking:

It's a plastic 15 gal RJS cell. There are 2 pickups. One is still unused. Maybe the unused one IS the vent and I'm venting the return. I'll have to give all your suggestions a try. Going back home from school Friday to work on the Jeep so I'll see if I can get it sorted out. Thanks a bunch for all the help.

that would definitely be the first (easiest) thing to check...

if the one you're connected to goes down into the tank, and the other doesn't, you just need to switch 'em...

Thanks Greg, they both look the same from what I can recall. Both threaded with holes, I just assumed it didn't matter. The unused pickup I covered the hole with a thin layer of rtv so that water wouldn't get down in the tank. So if indeed it is the vent, it sure ain't venting :). Thanks again though.
