fuel line/filter question

Working on a 77 Cherokee 360V8. The fuel filter has has two outlets one to carb and one return to the gas tank. Can you block off the return and use a single line or is it needed.

The 2nd outlet is a return line to the tank in case of excessive fuel pressure from the pump.Aint gonna happen! Stick a 1/4" bolt in it with a zip tie and your done. Neck..:driver:
 
That was the answer I was hoping for. Just wanted to make sure it would not create too much pressure and flood the carb.
