How bad is it to run fully locked on the street? This will be 2.5 ton rocks, welded or spooled front and rear, wheel brakes, 49" michelins, hydro assist steering, and the stock drive flanges. I ran a welded rear before and it wasn't bad, but I hear the front is much worse. Can I look forward to needing a football field to turn around? The hydro assist should be able to steer the wheels but will the front end just push? Could I possibly break axle shafts just from doing this?

you can get lockouts for the front so that it wont affect it on the street.... and as far as steering, some of the guys runnin rocks will haveta chime in, but ive heard it takes a football field to turn em anyways....

That would be the most unbearable experience you ever encountered while driving. I would say you would be tired of it before the end of the driveway and thats if its not to curvy.

go lockouts

not only would it take a parking lot to turn around but it would hop and lunge when turning. find a detroit for the front or some lockouts. the rockwells do turn fairly sharp if your not locked in the front

I have not run rockwells before but my experience with any other front axle has been the same. Fully locking it without lock out hubs is a mistake. You loose turning radius and it is hell to drive on the street. Oh yeah and yes you could break axle shafts that way. I know someone on here will disagree with me but thats OK they can have their opinion to I guess

the one time I accidently turned on my front ARB while going down the fence convinced me I'd never run a welded or spooled front...

I'm spooled frt and rr with wheel brakes, I run one lockout hub on the frt. Unlocked on the road letting one wheel spin free and the other wheel spinning the axle shafts and drive shaft (not like it's going to effect gas mileage on this thing). When clear of the asphalt I lock it in and go to 4wd. If you run pinion brakes don't go lockouts - no brakes when unlocked, oops!
