gas mileage on a tj

Whats it matter? The way gas prices are its sh!tty regardless. what year? and mods? Details help.

I have the 4.0 and it get's somewhere in the 15 range, but then again my jeep is lifted, geared, weighted down and has 175,000 miles on it. But they are right it's a jeep it's going to get bad gas milage no matter what engine it is, so you might as well go big and get the 4.0

I have a 4.0 (sorry don't know too much about the 2.5) w/ 33's and 3.73s (yeah it needs lower gears). I have been told I rag the hell out of it even when I am "not gettin on it too much" but I average 12-14 mpg. Hope this helps you out

i have a 4.0 with 5 spd and 4.88s on bfg all terrains for the street and I drive like a grandma but i average 17-18, and on long trips on the interstate where im driving 55-60(again grandma) I have gotten as high as 20mpg

I drove my 2.5L 5 speed TJ everyday from Chapel Hill to Raleigh to work. Now it's been a few years, but as I remember the highway miles were around 16 +/- . That said, I had messed with the intake in a way I would NOT recommend. (IE cone filter, PCV removal, etc.)

If you're running a stock 4 banger, and you're reasonable with the gas I think you could squeeze 18 out of it on the highway. I think it would be hard to get much better than that under normal driving conditions. The brick shape just isn't helpful at highway speeds.

Now if you don't mind "hypermiling" and pissing everybody off behind you, you could get over 20. But where's the fun in that? It's really hard in the 2.5L to not hammer the throttle to try & get up to speed.

My dad has a 97 with the 4cyl, and he consistently gets 20-22. He claims as high as 23.5, but that's a rarity. (He still writes down miles and gas in a little book every time)
"Good way to know if something is needing a tuneup"
That said, I hate riding with him, refuse to follow him and generally want to kick him in the ass when he is driving.
He never accelerates. (Not fast, just doesn't accelerate)
He never uses the brakes. 140k on his jeep, and his pads still look good.
Granted his not dogging it, means so far he's had to replace the front axle at 600 miles, (it kept leaking) the cable for the tumble on the passenger seat twice, and that's it.
(well oil and air filter)
I've had to replace, ermm,
everything. :(
But a more accurate guess would be 17-18 for 4.0 and 18-19 for a 4cyl.
