embarassed to even 'fess up to this, but earlier this morning, I mistakenly pumped 14 gallons of gasoline into my 2001 Dodge Cummins pickup ...the rest of the tank is diesel , pretty much 2 parts diesel to 1 part gas. The engine started running uneven a couple minutes later....like going 500rpm to 1000rpm to 500 to 1000

I shut it off when I realized my mistake but now it doesn't want to start.

I have the means to drain most of the tank ... I recon I'll get started on this, but i'd like to hear about possible [gulp] damage I might have done
:shaking:

exactly how long did you run the engine that way and what kind of rpms/engine load did you experience during that drive?

I usually add either 2-stroke oil, or diesel conditioner to the tank at every fillup, today I added 2-stroke oil , and then after I pumped the gasoline in added some more oil. it ran for maybe 5 minutes at idle and low rpm while it was cold ....seemed like as soon as it was warm, it wouldn't run properly. I was home by then.

I was able to pull 30 gallons of the fuel from the tank, and replaced it with fresh fuel, I changed the fuel filter as well, and it started right up and ran fine . I'll be keepin an eye on it

I guess I could add a few gallons of that fuel back to the tank with some 2-stroke oil at every fillup to get rid of it ... what do yall think about that?

In case you were wonderin, it was a BP diesel pump ...and I wasn't fully awake.
Helluva day to be workin on a truck outside....brrrrrrrrrr!

I got about 10 gallons in my F250. It puffed a little white smoke. As far as performance, didn't really notice a difference. I added a quart of transmision fluid and topped it off every evening.

That was at about 40k. It has 85k now and runs fine.

Damn BP has their diesel pumps black and the gas ones green! I've almost done that too seing how i'm used to seeing green for the diesel everywhere else...

I don't think I'd risk it with a VP44 pump. If it were any other truck I wouldn't be as concerned with it but those pumps are notorious for failure. If you want to do it, I definitely wouldn't put more than 2 gallons in per tank full of diesel.

X2 on the ATF. I usually run a quart of the cheapest stuff I can find to a tank. (00'Psd) With the gas in the diesel tank, if it were mine I would probably dump 3-4 quarts in. I don't know much about the vp44 inj. pump though, other than it can't handle a 50/50 blend of veggie oil & diesel.

I'd slowly put it in the truck just to get rid of it. A lot of the forestry guys will add a gallon of gas to their jerry cans on the bulldozers to keep it volatile after it sloshes around on their dozers for a few weeks.

I certainly wouldn't add ATF to my diesel though. There are several additives in it that are quite counterproductive to a combustion cycle. 2 stroke oil or just a good fuel additive should be fine.

Or go have yourself a party this weekend with a big ol' fire

Yea, x2 on this, I got a BP close to my house and have almost made this mistake several times on accident.

On the ATF I have always been told its good to run every once and a while to clean out the system of gunk

IIRC, it has been noted that two-stroke oil is more appropriate for mixing with diesel than ATF to increase lubrication in the IP...
not to mention if you are actually buying it just to mix (as opposed to filtering the waste atf/motor oil and adding that back to diesel) it would seem more cost effective to buy the two stroke oil

i use to fill the fuel filter with atf instead of fuel when changing the fuel filters, but that was a long time ago before all the o rings were made of a diffrent material. it would clean the injectors. that also was on big trucks not pick ups.these days a little bit of water can cripple a pump so i would only use fuel treatment.

Take a long time to mix 30 gal. back in, & takin a chance. Might look for a fuel oil distributor, or construction co, that has a LARGE tank. See if they would buy it at a discount!
Older Truckers, sometimes had to buy kerosen, if they could'nt make the Truck Stop. They would blend in ATF, to raise thecombustion of the K1. Some thought it worked as a cleaner.
Dont know on newer engines.

i did the same thing the first week i bought the 12v. drove .4 miles, drained it and changed the fuel filter and it was fine. damn BP i would rather throw away the $75 in fuel then blow the engine or lift pump.
