Im putting 5.29 gears into my 4runner. i have ifs still. how do i breakin the gears up front?
never heard tail of how to do this. would really like any info.
thanks TROY

You could pull the rear driveshaft, lock the front hubs, put it in 4wd and drive like that in front wheel drive for a few days. That's fun, lol... just look out for the torque-steer getting moving from a stop.

you do it in a solid axle...lol

Put it up on jack stands & put it in drive & let it run untill the diff is hot.

Yes, you can do that... the handling is def kinda funky.
Oh, is it an automatic? That can be problematic - I learned this teh hard way.... in the auto, the parking pawl only applies to the rear driveshaft and independent of transfer.
So besides e-brake, nothing to stop it from rolling lol.

Jeff's way works too, if you have 4 stands.
Also you could just drive it around in 4wd for awhile, just don't use 4low or do 75mph.

Wait - do you have ADD? If so, isn't the 3rd actually live all the time if oyu put in 4wd but disable ADD?

:confused:If its in 4WD wouldn't the F/R d-shafts be locked together? Therefore if the "park pawl" stops the rear it will consequently stop the front, assuming the hubs are locked. Right? Or am I missing something.

just drive it most gear break in is hype. if you drop in a set and go tow or drive 90 miles an hour for 4 hours and the fluid gets real hot the fluid will break down it will take the hardened face off the gear and eventually the gear will eat itself.

You'd think so - but aparently the auto tranny isn't set up that way.
I can't remember exactly off the top of my head, but it's like gear driving the chain that drives the front driveshaft is solenoid activated and only active in moving gears, or something like that. E.g. not actually "4wd" when in park.

Trust me - last night I did this, drove w/o rear driveshaft in place. In park, it will roll w/o foot on brake.
Also, if you have the hubs unlocked or not in 4wd and you turn it on and take out of park like this - look out, the engine will rev on it's own - no resistance against torque converter to stop it. So you can't put it back in park or it will grind the snot out of the gears!

what is ADD???

Auto Disconnect Drive or something like that. Basically the hubs are locked to shafts in the front gear, and a vacuum line pushes an actuator connecting/disconnecting thsi from the side gear. In theory this all happens for oyur when you put it in 4wd, so oyu don't have to manually locked the hubs at the wheel.
(in reality, the system is prone to failure and has more moving parts)
Take a look at your hubs, do they have manual switches you rotate to lock them in?
