This is another "how does my pattern look?" thread. The gears are used 4:10's and are in a hp 30. The pinion preload is set at 15 inch pounds and the backlash is set at .005. Any suggestions?

pinion to deep, i'd also like to see more backlash. I setup mine at .009 and never have had a gear comeback

also are you putting a load on the carrier when turning the pinion for the pattern?

used gears

You are not going to get a textbook pattern from used gears. They have already dished out and polished the original pattern into the teeth. Gets worse with older, more loaded sets.

the first pic looks to deep the second pic looks alot better, concentrate on the coast. were those pics all the same shims if so check your runout make sure back lash is the same no mater where the pinion and ring meet. i'd take .004 out of the first pic and increase backlash a hair. the second pic hard to tell from the pics but i might let that ride. the first appers it is to much on the face of the pinion

All the pics are from the same set up. Checked the backlash in three places and was .005 each time. I know that pictures can be hard to interpret but the consensus seems to be the pinion is a little too deep and I need to add a little back lash. And Greg, I like to play with the pretty yellow paint.:D Thanks guys, I'll adjust and post up again.

Pic #1 the pinion appears to be a little on the deep side, but close. The pattern in the orange paint is great. You're doing fine.

OK, here's what I went with. Took .003 out of the pinion and got the backlash to between .008-.009, depending where you read. I appreciate all the help.
