Can I just run Gear Oil in the Birf Housing you know the filler plug on the outside of the hub assembly. Or do I need to pack with grease?

I'm no toy expert but I don't believe the seals are meant for that light weight of a lubricant, Landons toy poured oil when his axle seals went out. Your suppossed to pack em but I know alot of people who just coat everything real well who trail only their rig, makes trailside opps alitttle less messy.

grease.

yea I went and got some...I just hated to have to drive to advance...I put about 1 tube in each one...

OK, now we'll tell you the right way to do it..

take the knuckle apart, and pack the grease into the birf like you would a wheel bearing. put a little on the new axle seal's rubber (if you're in there, replace it), put the axle shaft & birf into the housing and liberally grease around the inside, but you don't have to pack it full.

the way you did it doesn't get any grease into the birf, which is what needs the grease most. it's also gonna make one fawking HELL of a mess when you break the birf!

Now let me say I just put my longfields in that come pre packed and I did replace all bearings and seals and packed everything with Marine Lucas...With my Longs I hope I never have to pop it open. I know some guys that run diesel fuel in there birfs,,,I tore one apart this past weekend...Now that was a mess. I have replaced and changed and greased eveything I can...I was just getting ready to run to Uwaharrie and just and went and filled her upand came home and my pass side hub was pretty warm...I know it had to be grease or the Spindle nut was to tight so I backed it off half a turn strong finger tight with a quick punch to sinker her in...So I hope this helps out now...I plan to leave for Uwaharrie in the next 2 hours...

if your hub is warm it has absolutely nothing to do with the birf. It's your wheel bearings.

Grease

You can run your Toy without any grease inside the knuckle housing if you choose.(I put the grease in mine) The purpose for the grease inside the knuckle housing is to help the seals keep water and dirt out. The birfield should be properly packed "should come pre-greased" before it is installed.:driver:

yeah, but they squeak if you don't grease the outside at all.. :p

+1 to that. My shit squeaked like hell on the left front after my LONGS install. I put a few pumps in the knuckle with a gun and after a few minutes of driving....... No Mo squeaky.
