I just bought a 1988 4runner that needs to be my daily driver. It has a body lift and I'd like to run 32 or 33in tires. I want to gear it so I can do some wheeling. So I have two questions

1. Should I just leave it as is or will 33in tires without any gearing bring the hurt on and off road

2. If I do reduce gearing is dual cases, ring and pinion, or t-case gears the best way to go? what are some of the downsides to each?

thanks

If your going to run 33's I'd leave the stock 4.10's in it, cause if you want to go bigger in the future, your just shooting yourself in the foot by doing 4.88's.

4.88's for 33's for back to stock gearing
529's for 35's for back to stock gearing

installing gears doesnt run cheap, so if your strapped for cash stay with 4.10's

X2. Leave the gears alone for up to 33s. When you re-gear it you will want to do the ring and pinion. But leave that for bigger tires and better lift. Remember when you re-gear, you have to do both diffs, so twice the price.

ok I think I"m going to leave the axle gears alone, run 32s and probably put low gears in the t-case so I can have a lower gear when I want it but keep it the same on the street.

Id do a 4.7 gear set with a single case if you want lower gears off road
