I have an 84' XJ, I will be installing a 3.1 Stroker V6. I currently have a D35 rearend w/3.55 gears.

I just got my hands on a D44 w/3.54 gears. Considering the new motor that will be installed, should I regear the D44?

If so, then what does everyone suggest?

This will be a mixed use vehicle. Somedays I'll drive it work and somedays I'll take it offroad. I run 31" tires now.

man, I wouldn't even worry about regearing with only 31's. just curious, why are you dropping in a stroked 3.1 when you can grab a 3.4? if you're lucky a supercharged version.. .

Unfortunately......the dreaded AX5

I would not bother with regearing if you are only going to run 31" tires with either engine. Not worth the cost for the minimal off road capabilities you would get. Also would hurt economy if you will be driving in on the road often.

Not sure the AX5 will mate to those engines you mention. Even if it does I would seriously consider something else. It is marginal at best even with the 2.5L Jeep engine. I suggest you read this infor from the Novak site: http://novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ax5.htm
