Anybody try to use the stock compressor on a GenIII for on-board air? Its supposedly variable displacement so Im wondering if its ok to use for this. I run a york on my TBI motor, and want to leave it complete for when I pull it out, but I may need to steal it to mate it to the 6.0 for reliable air. If I need to pull it, its got a 7 groove pulley. Would it be safe to run a 6 groove belt on this 7 groove pulley?

Dont know about using the stock variable compressor for air, but its fine to run a 6 rib belt on 7 rib pulley as its lined up right.

Know that the AC compressors on the GenIII engines had issues just pumping r-134a, let alone the task of actually pumping air.

I really think that GM saw that this may be issue, or was enough of one to warrant a seperate drive belt. Not to mention it's mounting location isn't exactly an optimal place for an item that may need regular service.

I think you'd be better served by your York and the 6rib belt.
