my old 1976 CJ I've been working on has a pretty good frame considering the year, its got a good amount of mud in the frame at a couple places, anybody know a good way to get it out, guess I could drill some holes in the bottom, then fill them in after I get the mud out? Thanks

I pull the front of my jeep up on some fairly tall home made ramps. Then turn the garden hose on full blast and stick it into the front of the frame and watch the mud run out the back of the frame. Works fairly well. Takes a while sometimes though.

The mud is holding the internal rust in place, if you wash it out, you will expose new metal to be rusted :)

Is the rear most crossmember rusted out? If so cut it out, pressure wash and build a new xmember bumper.

Keep an eye out on the rear fixed spring hanger, this is where the mud collects and rusts the frame from the inside out. The place you will see rust first though is inboard vertical section just in front of the rear shackle hanger. Dunno how to prevent it, my CJ was succumbed to this cancer :(

I thought that was a factory option! haha. Mine had it there too....pretty sure about everyone ive poked my head under the past 8 years has had some rust there.

Early broncos have the same problem. I use a hose also and then follow with some diesel fuel to help prevent rust.
so whats the best thing to spray or pour inside the frame to prevent rust, diesel fuel, oil, ?

i like wd40 or pb-blaster. but anything is better than nothing.

I've heard of linseed oil, but really have no idea wtf that is, where to get it, how to apply.

Yeah, I've used it in finishing guitar necks before... I don't know how you'd apply it to the inside of a boxed frame, I don't think it sprays very well.

On a side note, someone was telling me other day that used diesel oil mixed with a bit of fuel makes a hell of a rustproofer. First I'd heard of it, but GubNi is saying he uses a bit of diesel... Anyone ever heard of it?
