Girls drown in jeep - NEWS

Yeah. I thought they disproved that on mythbusters.

no... they showed that it was possible to get out of a car in mythbusters but that was in a completely lit, warm, stress free environment. In moments of panic everything is different. When a car hits the water you either need to open the doors or windows immediately, before there is any pressure on them, or (like the mythbusters episode) you need to wait till the whole car is full of water and the pressure on the inside and outside is equal. It is tragic, but understandable, that in a dark field in a time of panic you couldn't figure out what to do.

I think it was plausible. Two things make it difficult to drown though.

1. Roll down a window and crawl out.

2. Wait till the car fills with water and the door will open easy, then swim to safety.

might be able to roll down manual windows but electric would short out I think - or vehicle would shut down hydrolock and kill any power.

cant open doors under pressure unless you do it as soon as you hit the water.

makes ya wish you had the sunroof open if it happened to you maybe.... cold in North dakota though this time of year.
I doubt I could crawl through my acura sunroof though.

I guess we all should carry the hammer things that break glass just in case. Or just be bigwoody and pull the net down and swim out. :)

this makes me wonder why in the world they were in the back of the jeep. Seems if they had stayed where they were then tried to open the front doors they would have been fine

When it went in the water the jeep would have went down nose first they most likely went to be back to try to escape. Natural sense is to climb to higher ground.

Very tragic.

there is no latch on the inside...right?

i like the headline (girls drown trying to escape jeep). it's those killer jeeps again. always trying to attack someone. thats not humor. thats sarcasm at the journalist. "SUV kills family of 19" "Truck crashes into taco stand, kills 7"

the cars arent killing people, the drivers are.

how bout for a headline, "young girls trespass, and die as result"

They couldnt just leave it at stargazing, they had to involve offroading.

I ve heard and talked about this before, but never realized that a manual handcrank window would be just as hard to open. Makes sense though.

I guess the best thing to do is wait for the car to fill up?

Article said they were trying to open the back glass....97 xjs dont have a back glass that opens. It opens w/ the tailgate. Also, 97's all have electric windows(I think...could be wrong)never seen manuals on a 97.

Either way, this is a terrible way to die.

This is the key. I'm sure they climbedi nto teh back to get away form teh water, it probably took a minute or two to go under. Then once it the back - OH SHIT there's no handle to open the hatch.

I had an XJ for 8 years and it always bugged me that there was no handle on the inside, every now and then I'd have a buddy ride back there and they were stuck until you let them out.

I'm not saying "I't's the engineer's fault", just that it was probably their instinct to try and go out that way.

"Police are investigating the cause of the deaths of three college softball players found dead in their car submerged in a pond. The women may have been in the vehicle when they made two calls for help"

But I still haven't seen where the cause of death was confirmed as a drowning. I think there may be more to this story than the media is putting out there for us. All this story tells us is that they were found dead, in a car, underwater. Maybe another news story tells it better, but this one still sounds suspicious to me.

are you thinking that mescaline was involved? maybe they thought they were in a submarine and had to under water to escape giant 3 headed chickens.

seriously though, i dont think that college girls went stargazing.....sober.

yeah funny - girls can stargaze and what would they say dudes were doing in a jeep?
(no not :gay: ) .... usually a guy's death in something like this is labelled with drugs, alcohol or idiocy but this is stargazing...

not trying to pull this thread into the garage....
F!~

One of our (Chip and myself) golden rules is to not go 4 wheeling or "offroading" by ourselves. We always have another vehicle with us.

Mythbusters did a thing on it and they said the window would still electrically operate. They said the pressure would keep them from going down but the test they did on it was to take a car door lay it flat and pile sand bags on the glass. Of course it ain't going to go down, the sand bags are in the way it won't push the sand bags off the glass, but I think water will slide off the glass and the window will go down.

um electric switch won't work if the submersion shorts the electrical system, e.g. battery etc.

A standard 12 volt system would be fine underwater for door locks, windows, and lights. The radio, ignition system and the new cars with their canned systems would likely fail though.

Mine has mauals!! 97 SPORT with rubber floor no carpet.

we will have to agree to disagree here.
I see major fuse blown and electric power off.

At last thats what happened when my 95 GC went in the pond

how many times have you heard a non Jeep/4Wheeler call a Grand Cherokee a Cherokee? I wonder if it was a ZJ that did have the rear opening window.... still doesn't have a latch on the inside that I'm aware of.

I think it was panic situation and they went where the air was. Then tried breaking the glass back there. A Panic Situation like that is a tough thing to stay calm in.

Cool! Wanna trade doors?

At least now, I know they exist, and have something to search for! Thanks.

Good point...didnt think about it that way. Just going by the illustration on the page, I guess.
