Hey everybody. I have just got my FJ40 project rolling under its own power, and I am afraid I am having synchro problems in my NV4500. It is out of a 98 GM 3500 with a sb350, I bought used, to put behind my 350 I built. I have read all about their carbon fiber synchronizers having problems, and I think this is what I am have myself. I am using the approved dealership recommended (any other forbidden, ha) Castrol Syntorque, and have driven it on the road about 200 miles since it has all been put together. I am grinding like a son of a gun going into 4th if I do anything other than "baby shift" it into that gear. I have actually for the most part been skipping 4th gear all together it is so bad. Even if you put it into 4th without grinding at all, if you get into the gas to accelerate there will be a hard "kick" where the back end feels like I dumped the clutch. It will drive in 4th, but I am nervous that I am going to puke gears if I get in the throttle hard any. This is going to be a "there and back" rig, and I need to know that I am not riding a time bomb to and from/on the trail.

I guess I am asking if anyone knows where I can get my GM NV4500 rebuilt reliably and reasonably priced, but without cutting any corners...? I considered doing it myself, but I am doing this project now with only hand tools, everything else is getting out-sourced. And I guess I am chicken. Thanks.

What tools do you think you need... that you don't have?
What knowledge do you think you need... that you don't have?
hehe, Well... I am currently doing this build in my dad's garage with only hand tools. Well, I do have an electric drill and 4" circle saw. My wrench set is no more than 200pc, I don't think even that many, and my breaker bar is a high lift jack handle. And as for the knowledge, ehh, I know how to tie my shoes. No, seriously, but I built the engine that is in it years ago, and think I could manage it, but I would be taking somewhere to press on/off the gears and bearings or whatever would need it, anyways, so.. I figure I will just take it somewhere. I got a good referral for a shop here in Winston-Salem where I live, so I'm pretty sure that is my ticket. Thank you for any help though.

Just asking... I'm a couple miles away at best, have most tools & a press... should you change your mind.

Awesome. Thanks for the help guys. Thanks Caver Dave for the offer. I'll let you know if I decide to be brave! Thanks.

Does it grind less if you double clutch? My 3rd gear synchros no longer exist. 1st and R are pretty much gonners too.

Rebuild commencing right now though.

I've just been double clutching for 2 years
