The company I work for is sending me to Russia. I have never traveled abroad. I know some of you guys have I'm looking for advice on do's & dont's.

Ya, Got that last year I do know I have to get some shots :shaking:

take your own toilet paper (real advice from a friend that went there for work a lot a few years ago -- in the main tourist/visitor type areas it was OK -- in other parts of the country, hotels either didn't have any at all, or it was more like wax paper).

Actually I have heard the same thing.
Also, take your own washcloth for washing your face. Chances are the the hotel will not provide it.
And if you wear contacts and need a particular kind of solution, take enough for your trip b/c it will probably not be available.

For any electronics you have, take a converter. They sell them at Wally World.
Take some snacks you like, there will be time when you don't like what is served.
Depends on where and when, take appropriate clothing.
IF you are gonna call home, take calling cards.
Either buy extra memory cards for your camera, or makes sure you can download them

Try to stay with a group of some sort. Sometimes locals see foreigners assuming they have money and may try to rob/swindle you. Also be aware of local merchants, sometimes they will try to take advantage of you because they also assume you have money. Just depends on what area of the country your are in.

Keep it coming guys I taking notes on this stuff. I am going tuesday for my shots.

Do: drink the local vodkas. It's sooooo not like the crap you get at the ABC store.

The group thing is really important. NEVER travel around alone
Carry wallet in the front pocket.
Don't drink from glasses (likely to get drugged) Get unopened bottles
Try to blend in as much as you can.
Don't dress like a super rick pimp.
Know where the US Embassy is
Pay attention to your surroundings (if you have to question if you are in a safe place, you aren't) Situational awareness is key
Watch the movie Hostel to get an idea of what some of those countries look like and how some people think. It's the best example to reality I can give.
Don't get Married while there....LOL

In guyana:
I got jumped back in 96 and the guy tried to stick me with a butcher knife. He had 3 other guys come running over to get my wallet. I always carry my wallet in the front pocket. My buddy came running back and 2 ran. 1 tried to pick his bike up and the guy that had the knife was hanging on to my shirt trying to stick me but I had control of his wrist (after I got my palm cut trying to gain control). He finally tried to get away and let go by then my buddy had another guy on the ground. He was holding the guy on top of him pumching him in the head. I kindly assisted to kicking the guy in the face until my shoe fell off. I put it back on and kicked again when I noticed back up coming. He rolled the guy off and we took off running. Went to the police and it was a lost cause. The Guyanese Defense force went out looking for them and were going to shoot them on the spot. That place was crazy. I saw some crazy shit there that I could spend days writing about.

In thailand:
I saw a street of girls (Well guys dressed like them) that looked better than the girls and would rob the Guys when they approached them then steal their clothes.

In the Philipines:
You could get your Baht bus to stop and buy you beer.

In Singapore:
Super Clean but Expensive and had problems with territorial locals.

Just wanted to add those places in case you get some kind of crazy lay-over

Buy a passport wallet that hangs from your neck and wear it inside your shirt. Sold at Wal-mart. Don't lock your luggage. It's not permitted anymore and they will cut the locks off.

Travel

Just stay home, been most places, there is no place better than here. :driver:

Try to blend in as much as you can.

Lee boy purchased a slip form curbing machine about 3 years age & they asked me to redesign it well I did & it works well but we don't have any rep's that can run the unit. The normal stuff we do is asphalt pavers, graders, rollers, asphalt tack trucks, chip spreaders & maintainers all hot mix. Nothing to do with concrete I have the most knowledge of this machine. So I am charged with the task of going to train the customer how to run it successfully.

slick your hair back and try to look like a douche.
don't say shit to anybody. try to look like a murderer.

(bring me back some vodka!!!!!)

Treat Russia like other 3rd world countries...Don't eat anything that is not cooked. Only exception is an orange or other citrus. Visited and lived in many places, and that mantra has kept me well for years.

Use bottled water for teeth brushing; what comes out of the tap is not suitable for anything but flushing. Vodka can be used if the bottled water is not up to par. Remember about the tap water when asked what you want to drink with a meal.

hey Chuck, did you say you wanted some vodka?? LOL

Man I grew up over seas, and have been all over the Western World and some of the Eastern too. Maybe it's just the way I'm reading it, but we got a bunch of Paranoid people here. If you do all that has been said, you'll never sleep and have an Ulcer by the time you get home. The Wallet in th efront Pocket is something I've done for years and still do.

Just use your common sense and Enjoy yourself. Keep your eyes open and take in everything you see.
Take a few pairs of off brand Jeans and gain some friends while there, Take Levi's and they'll be your friends for life!
Oh and again, Where in Russia????

I think Moscow but the exact destination I am not sure of yet I was just told yesterday to get my stuff ready. I'll find out today
