A friend of mine has a 2000 chevy 3500 cc dually 4x4 454 5speed 4.10 gears 88,000 miles with power everthing. he bought the truck new and has kept good care of it but no longer has need of it. the truck is in great shape it has a few scratches hear and there but nothing major. he offered it to me for $8500 is this a good deal? all i here about is diesels now so will this tow a full sized trail rig? i know that gas mileage will suck but i don't have to drive it every day. are there any know problems to look out for with these truck? thank in advance for all of your info

THE 454 IS A HECK OF A WORKHORSE. THE ONLY COMMON PROBLEM I KNOW OF IS THAT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS TEND TO CRACK. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR 8-10MPG

X2 on what Greg said. It ain't a diesel, but it'll pull pretty dang good.
As far as is it a good deal, check the books. A lot depends on mileage, tranny, and so on.

Intake gaskets are an issue as well, they'll either leak coolant at the front or rear of the heads, or there can be an air leak into an intake runner at the head, will cause a lean/rich condition on one or both banks ( P0171-P0174 If I remember right )

Yes, exhaust manifolds crack and break, and the manifold studs/bolts also pop causing leaks, can burn a valve as a result.

Gas mileage sux

IMHO thats a pretty good price for that truck all things considered. Check KBB etc to verify things, run the VIN.

It will definitely tow what you want NP.

As mentioned MPG will be 10-12 with 4.10s. Probably 8-10 towing (depending how fast you gotta go)

I got 15mpg on my last trip (empty) to NY with my 95 SRW truck w/ 454 but I have 3.73s in it. Point being if your not mashing the pedal all the time you can keep the mpg up.

Any pics ???

you know I have stard to see 2nd gen Dodge CTD's for that price or even less. an you can get 17-22 mpg

Personally I would really look for a diesel. I pulled a trailer for 8 hours with my XJ on the trailer and used less than 3/4 or a tank of fuel. That is going from Jacksonville to URE and back in my Excursion with the 7.3. Depends on how much and how often you would pull. I think with gas prices climbing you would get your money back with a Diesel in the long run. It will get the job done but may not really be worth it.

Uhhh Since owning and selling my 01 PSD truck, I've seen diesle go from being $0.20 cheeper to now $0.36 MORE than gas at the pumps.

To compare apples to oranges doesn't show the true costs of a truck. Your comparing your Excursion, ok im sure it tows great, what's book value on that ? 3/4 tank ? over how many miles. Whats your calculate MPG?

What does a comparable Dodge of similar year/options cost ?

Ok 2nd gen Dodges are in that price range? same options ? with how many miles? Vs the 88k on the truck he is asking about..

Are the costs still the same ? (You tell me) Is it comparable to the truck hes asking about ? (Later model 2000 w/ 88k with full options.. )

Ok, Some MPG math..
Diesel truck getting 15mpg (towing) (Diesel = $3.39)
Price per mile to drive = .226 / mile

Gas truck getting 10mpg (towing) (Gas = $3.03)
Price per mile to drive = .303 / mile

$ 0.077/mile MORE cost to drive the gas engine.

So for towing only, say 2 trips per month, lets say..
2x300 mile trips = 600 miles
=$46.20 MORE in gas vs diesel truck (assuming you get the above MPGs)

Does that cover the extra cost of a diesel truck ?

GAwd dammit Mike !! there you go using logic again !

You are confusing the fact that diesel rules all, no matter maint. needs or fuel cost.

Hell. I'm almost convinced I need to crush the GMC and find me a Dodge w/Cummins just so I can be one of the cool kids !

i don't see nearly 10 from my 454 suburban when towing. more like 6-8, less going through the mountains. it's got 4.10's though. normal empty driving is 10, maybe 11-12 if i'm easy on it. it does have 226k though, and no telling when the last time it had a tune up. other than that, it pulls great.

Exactly why I drive my Van with the 460 in it.
It ain't the purdiest
It ain't the fastest
It ain't the cheapest to run,......but

It has a very comfortable bed
It's paid for
It hangs with the oilers pretty good except for the steeper longer hills.

I do believe if I need to get that sooner, then I should just leave sooner

That's good logic. I guess I am just bias since I really love my truck. I get right at 17 loaded. Not rael sure what the true milage is. Last week I drove 12 hours on a full tank. I think that is pretty good. I am going to have to fill it up and see what mileage I get for sure. Towing only once or twice a month I guess it would be a lot better to get a cheaper truck. When I bought mine Diesel was way cheaper than gas and now it's the opposite. Truckers need to strike and drive the costs down.

i have looked at a few diesel in the same price range put they where rode hard and put up wet. the motors was fine but the front ends need a full on rebuld every seal leaked and the seats where broken down.i test drove this truck to day and it feels strong we went to pick up his sons 86 mercedes 300sd(blowen motor) it bought up old fort mountian at 60 in forth no problems:driver:. i think i'm going to buy it kbb retail is $11700 so i guess i would be paying low wholesale for it. oh and here some pics

Good looking truck!

Even though I subscribe to Mike's "logic"... I *was* only interested in buying a BB gasser for my occasional towing... until I found what I thought was a good deal on a 1st Gen CTD.

Talk about about slippery modification slope! It's twice as steep as the 4x4 mods... once you get the bug, your wallet will never be the same!

On that note... I'd have been on that truck in a skinny! Good find

For comparison sake, Taters 8.1L/Allison 2500HD X-cab 4x4 will net approx 13mpg empty (driving like Granny) and pulling anything under the sun... 9mpg. He says it'll gain a couple MPG by keeping the speeds under 65mph and backing off the throttle to keep it from kicking down on the long grades... never seen it pulling my junk though! :D

Congrats, thats one helluva nice truck. I too have a gas truck, it is an 02 6.0 HD Chevy. Itll pull my jeep just fine, and gets about 11 mpg pulling. I get around 16 empty so Im pretty happy with that. Ive got a honda for gas mileage!!!!
