I am curious if anybody knows of a good cheap swap candidate for an ax-5. I am not really thrilled about installing another turd that I am sure to grenade again. I have heard of a toyota trans swap. does anybody know the particulars? I also thought about a granny 4 speed, np435, sm465?

I sure love the nv4500 in my other jeep, but this one is supposed to be LOW budget. I am looking for a cheap and strong alternative to the ax5 that i grenaded. I am not against an automatic, what carries the same spline counts? I found a neat ax15 swap on PBB using a dakota bellhousing that i am leaning towards right now. Any other suggestions??

its my understanding that an SM420 or SM465 will bolt to that AX-5 bellhousing with some minor drilling for a few mouting studs... Obviously you would need a different T-case, but its a good time to upgrade if you are gonna go through the work... You would need a different spline clutch disk, but could still use the pressure plate and clutch cylinder...

Hey guys new to the board here.

The ax15 swap is cost effective and pretty simple. I have been running it for 1.5 years with zero problems after i switched to the external slave setup.

the sm420/465 can be done by using a 2.8 chevy bellhousing or buying the kit from Novak.

Np435 is doable as will with an adapter plate from AA and reusing the ax5 bellhousing. My bud has been running it for about 2 years behind the 2.5. No real street friendly however.

Good luck

Thanks
Jeremy

The NV44500 is a god swap but they are very expensive. A low budget swap would be the AX-15 and Dakota bell housing. The ax15 is a medium duty trans so as long as you do not put some 450 hp monster motor in there you should be ok. Most other options I have looked at require adapters and what not.

4.0 L srtaight 6 and AX-15 in my Jeep. So I have not read up on the AX5 and what makes a good swap a whole lot.
