Bought an '01 Toyota 4Runner today. Not exactly what I wanted, but it'll do and its a helluva lot more dependable than my current DD.

How big of tires can I get without having to re-gear the tranny? I was thinking I'd get some 31's, possibly 33's with a 3" lift. Would the tires fit and whatnot? 'Preciate it.

Regearing is almost always done in the axles, not the tranny.
I would think you would be fine up to around a 33 with stock gearing and a v8, but you won't have quite the control you might like.

Even with the v6 you will be fine until you go pretty big.
If I were you, I would slap on a set of 31" all terrains and a good set of recovery points and have fun.

01 4Runner V6's come with 4.10's from the factory. Im running 285/75/16 Goodyear MTR's (33's) with a 3" lift and I have no power issues. It still tows my trail rig just fine.

You can fit 265/75/16's stock.

As for lift's...options:

1: Sonoran Steel Kit 1.1 aka TRD/Land Cruiser Lift Kit
2: Old Man Emu 2.5" Kit
3: Toytec Lifts 2-3" Kit

Personally...Im running a homebrew version of the Sonoran Steel Kit and it performs the best out of any of the three major lifts for 3rd generation 4runners. Good on road ride, great height gain as well as amazing performance off road.
