are you serious? i bet my brother is gonna be pissed if that goes into effect. he lives up near wake forest and works in cary. 540 is the best way for him to get to work!

::edit::
well maybe it won't affect him. looking at the map, it looks like it's the section around cary that'll be toll? i think..

I live in this area and I've been following it closely. Yes, they do intend to make it a toll road and yes, it will suck. The reason the new section of 540 isn't in interstate is that if it was they wouldn't be able to charge a toll on it. They bought all new signs just before it opened.

If you going to have a toll road you most certainly want some kind of EZ-pass system. It's so much better I don't know why anybody would prefer to pay with their change. In some of the newer systems you don't even have to slow down to go through the toll.

My experience with toll roads up north has been pretty good. They are always the best paved, the best plowed, and they are faster than their free counterparts. However, it still sucks to pay more than just gas taxes.

I wonder how it will affect property values in the vicinity? I live right off 40 and won't have to use it, but I can't see permanent toll roads as a positive thing. Can anyone else? I guess it gets it built a lot faster, but damn.

Ah yes - the Toll Roads. We were told they were creating a toll road commisison in order to explore the options for toll roads. However - the charter for the Toll Road Commision is to create Toll Roads. I certianly thought the Toll road commission was to start a discussion on toll Roads - not to start Toll Roads themselves.

Want to know how great Toll Roads Are? Go look at the PA Turnpike. Proudly advertised as the Nations Oldest Toll Road. You figure they would have paid for that by now.

Toll Roads - never go away. Once you hire someone to collect the tolls - you end up paying them for life. First their salary, then they retire and your paying for those costs. hire the replacment and the Tolls go up. you have to pay for two people - one current employee and the retirement benifits of the original. So - our Tollroads will never go away inspite of the promise to only use the tolls to pay for contruction.

Another fine example of toll roads is Florida. All the toll roads I have driven on down there pretty much suck. I have driven from Miami to Boca on those toll roads and I can't say they were in great condition. The bright side to the Florida situation is they don't have state income taxes. I could handle toll roads if the NC government could handle giving up the income tax.
$.02

I will unfortunately have to use it often to visit family etc but what really burns me up is the traffic its going to cause out by my house in the morning from people who don't want to pay for it.

what do they mean "per mile"

god that sounded stupid... What I was trying to say is how do they determine many miles, is it the amount of stretch of road, how many times you pass by.. Am I making any sense?

I never used a toll road before

Some toll roads up north track you at each entrance and exit ramp. My best guess is that they do the same thing and charge $0.14 for each mile between your entry and exit ramp.

Just hope they don't track how long it took you to go thoses miles....

I believe they are testing those cameras off the Trinity Rd overpass shooting 40 east bound traffic.

Last week or so I have seen MANY camera setups just above the rail and many vehciles sitting there, including a WRAL news van yesterday.

that will come next once they realize they can :)

I was always worried about that. You pickup a card when you enter (like in a parking garage), they have the time stamped on it...say the exit you get off at is 90 miles away, and you're card was stamped only an hour ago...
Well, I guess I wasnt too worried, its not like I ever slowed down

it is a lot more difficult with the paper cards like they have up north..(that you are describing) but when they are taking pics/videos and recording EVERYONE that goes on that road it will be a lot easier to send paper tickets :)

yeah I know, my only point was that it had come up in my paranoid-big-brothers-watching-us mind at some point. I did a lot of travelling on I-90 thru Mass and NY. It wouldn't have been that difficult for the SHP/DOT to develop a chart for each exit tollbooth, showing acceptable times from every entrance point. Of course with new technology, like an EZ pass beacon on every windshield, its really a no-brainer to track who goes where and when. The only hurdle would be ACLU and the privacy advocates. But I digress, it sucks that there might be a toll road in Raleigh.
