Grand Cherokee front axle ?

My Uncle has a 99 GC and it's missing the frt driveshaft since he bought it a month ago. Is there a way to do a preliminary check of that axle before spending the money and time to install a new driveshaft?

Pop the cover off and take a peak, make sure everything is there and feels the way it's suppose to. Do you know why it's missing the front driveshaft?
 
Thanks...not sure why it's gone. From some research it seems to be what some do when the cv on the shaft starts making noise and they assume a bad TC. As cheap as this shaft is I will probably just help him install one and hope that it's solved. It's the selec-trac version 4wd.
