grand cherokee to cherokee engine swap?

i have blown the motor in my 99 cherokee and need to know if the motor and trans out of a 96 grand cherokee will bolt up to mine. they are both an inline 6.

my brother-in-law has a Grand motor in his XJ but I dont know much about the swap.

I don't see why the new one wouldn't fit. If it's a different year, there might be some motor mount different, but you should probably get new ones anyway.

will the transmission and diff mount up right with my front driveshaft and all?

Are they both the same trans? (i.e. both auto)?

yeah their both auto and 4wd.

Different trans. ZJ uses 42re and XJ uses aw4. Won't work.

I should add that the motor will swap over, just not the trans.

so the transmissions wont fit? the one i have in it now was taken out of a 92 cherokee and has seen its better days so i was hoping to use the one out of the grand cherokee but i guess not now. Anyone know where i can get a trans for cheap?

you can call triple a or my buddy has an 88 model for sale cheap. 500 i think has had a lot of work done to it within the past year so theres not much wrong with it. just let me know but i will keep my eyes out for you. ive ran across a bounch of cherekee stuff here lately
