2002 Grand Cherokee, 4.0, Automatic, 4x4, 210,000 miles:

Will not upshift. It was low on fluid, so I added some fluid, but it still will not upshift. It stays in 2nd gear (I assume it is 2nd). Is the transmission toast, or is this something simple?

My wife said it drove fine earlier today, but this evening she got in it to go to the store to buy bacon and it wouldn't upshift, so she turned around and came back without bacon. I gave her the keys to the truck so she could go get bacon.

I had a problem with my 02 grand Cherokee before I got rid of it that sounds the same.... I thought it was shot so took it to a shop and they just replaced the the Control Solenoid the part was $200 +195 for labor. IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN I WOULD HAVE DONE IT MY SELF Im not sure how to test it before you spend the money but might be able to search it.

is it an aw4 or an 42re?
is there any codes in it?
from the sound of it, it's most likely a 42re, if it is, governor pressure sensor and governor pressure solenoid.
try driving it while manually shifting it, and see what happens.

I think a 42RE.
It seems to want to start in 2nd, whether I start in D, 2, or 1. If I am going, I can downshift manually to 1 and get it to downshift into 1st, but that is it.

I replaced the governor pressure sensor and governor pressure solenoid today and that seems to have taken care of the problem. It is shifting properly. Thanks for your help! It was an easy job, I even found a video on youtube that showed how to do it before I started.
