Since my CTD came with an 80gal AL bed mounted tank & electric switching valve (operated via dash mounted switch, which supposedly switches the fuel gauge also [aux. tank has sender/float])...

Can I get away with simply using a HotFox type coolant heated pickup?

Or if needed, since I de-plumbed the OEM tranny "heat exchanger" (guaranteed to make anything flowing thru it 180*+) guessing it could be used for supplemental heating prior to hitting the valve?

Also, what's the best bang (micron vs media cost) on a filter to plumb between the tank & valve?

heat is your friend. I'd run HIH to a Hot Fox. Might as well use the tranny cooler. A coolant heated filter such as a Vormax with FH1000 element inline would be good. Hey, that setup sounds real familiar :huggy:

run the vormax and leave that plugged up POS tranny cooler in the scrap pile. The last thing you need is a flow restiction feeding your engine.

call me if you have any questions.

I have some of these left

Let me know if you need one it's 10 micron max 35 gpm.

Tony... how many miles you putting on grease/day? Any issues with that setup when it starts getting cold (32*-down)? IOW, at what point into the engine temps can you throw the switch and not have draw issues?

I really don't think there's anything wrong with it... 1/2" lines in/out and have been told the TF tranny's will pump 5+ gal/min... should flow just fine. Only problem I had was it heated the ATF to 180*sitting in the driveway!

For you both... guessing the Vormax has become the defacto heated filter these days?

Zero lately. I had a stuck plunger in the IP, I think from some hot rodding the PO had done. I got the IP rebuilt, but have been pretty slack on getting the truck back on the road. I have a temp gauge I plan to re-install directly out of the heat exchanger (no the tranny cooler). I would just switch when the factory coolant temp gauge got to 1/3 cool, that seemed like after 5 miles or so.
