i gt a 98 xj with stock drive train under it. hp d30 front and 8.25 out back. Now when i stop at a stop sign and make ither way turns it makes a slight grinding noise out of the rear axle I assume. Any idea what or where to look. Next the front drive shaft has a lot of slop in it when rotating back an fourth in park. it also has up an down play at the slip part of it. Anything will help even the picking on me for not using tech. terms for everything. Thanks guys for any help you could throw my way

The grinding sounds like a possible brake rotor cover scrubbing. Or the brakes them selves.

The play in the drive shaft when rotating it is ok, Now the up and down slop is not, Unless your referring to the slip yoke sliding in and out. But it shouldn't have any lateral movement.

the slip yoke...where it connects together in the middle on the front drive shaft just pushing up an down on it is when it has slight play in it... its not the brakes. there drums sounds almost like a bad bearing. but when checking it on a 8.25 it should have some play shouldnt it?? also Ive heard there C clipped is that true?

sorry I wish i knew the real names of what Im talking about buuuttt I dont lol. I have preatty good mechanical skills just not very good diag skills

the slight plays like the inner shafts no big enough for the outer and i wriggles around in it

The rear shaft has a load on it, as in its locked due to the transfer case being in gear, the front shaft is not locked in the transfer, you can turn it a little until the gears mesh in the axle.

A good sign of a wheel bearing in the rear is a leak at the inner wheel. The seal will get damaged allot of the time, But not always. If so it will drip on the inside of the tire.

Jack the rear up and put it in N and spin the wheels (by hand) and listen to it. Be sure the secure the front tires from rolling, Then repeat with the front and see if you can figure out where the sound is coming from.

More than likelly its the greasable fitting in the xj front driveshaft i think its a 1310 cv style maybe not really sure but it will eventually start pinging when ya go down the road nothing that will kill you if it breaks going down the road but could screw up ya tcase...

jacking it up dosent work cause it only does it under a load..idk prolly just one of them noises lol. the grease fitting?? could i just replace it. I keep everything greased bout every other or 3rd oil change. it is a cv style shaft as far as i know and its a factory shaft. theres no leaks and the only leak that was on the axel is the rubber sh""y fill plug. I figured it wouldnt kill me just a lil P.M so i wouldnt have to fix a worse problem

nahh the oil. cause its new and resealed bout 5k ago if. on the way home from the flats the pass. side started makeing kind of a creaking noise. its been raing to much to jack it up and look but Im going more towards the bearing. the grinding parts we may have figured out being a loose leaf spring u bolt and twisting axel binding the pinion up....sounds right i think lol.
