My son turns 12 this weekend. He's an AC/DC, Metallica, Megadeth, COC, SOD, Nickelback kinda kid . I want to surprise him with a Guitar Hero game. Seems like there is more to it than just snagging a game and the guitar. There are multiple games and different guitars. Can you get them bundled in stores or only online? What's the best way and the best place to buy? It will have to be simple since I will be sending my wife out to do it on her lunch hour. Thanks.

They come in packages (includes Guitar and Game) Which package, however, depends on which system he is getting it for.

As far as I know, Guitar Hero is only out for PS2. Guitar Hero 2 is out for PS2 and Xbox 360, and Guitar Hero 3 is out for Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, and I believe the Wii as well.

And I will add that it's addicting. I'm stuck in the medium level about 30 songs or so into it. (Guitar Hero 3) I can't relay the info to my fingers fast enough. Gotta get to the uh huh stage and quit thinking about it.

 I just happened to talk to a guy today that hasn't hardly been to his college classes this year-due to this game. It must be good.

I would say get it at Sams or Costco if you have a membership there because its usually cheaper. And yes it is very addicting...I beat 6 levels on hard in about 7 hours straight.... But a very awesome game.

what system? i like the wireless guitar for the 360...guitar hero 3 bundle. once he beats that you can get him the other games without the guitar. of course it's always nice to have 2 guitars for the 2 player version.

also rock band is pretty fun, although if you get good at the guitar on guitar hero, the rock band guitar parts are pretty easy.

but i'll put it this way, i bought my 360 mainly just so i could geek out on gh3.

...once he beats that you can get him the other games without the guitar...

Guitar hero seemed ridiculously too easy...a couple of friends and I finished the game on expert (or the highes level?) in 3 evenings over Christmas...was a bit disapointing...this was on a Wii if it matters...

Although we are all musicians, I wouldn't say that it was a large advantage...this is also the first video game I've played in 5 years or so though so maybe my expectations were too high...it is fun with a 12 pack though:beer:

Kevin, as stated above, what system does your son already have for playing games on?

If the answer is NONE:

Cheapest route would be to go to EBGames and buy a USED PS2 and then buy the Guitar Hero 3 bundle ($79ish) FOR the PS2.

2nd Cheapest route would be to buy a Nintendo Wii, $199 and then the GH3 for WII bundle ($79 I think for all systems)

3rd route (and my personal favorite / XBOX Live is the best) Xbox 360 PRO edition (or higher/more $$) PRO is $350 approx, there is a $299 version with no harddrive, I would NOT do that...and then the GH3 bundle.

Final route is Playstation3(PS3) - $399-499, but is also a BlueRay high definition DVD player which is nice.

If he already has any of those systems then just buy the bundle with the game/guitar. You can buy "aftermarket" wireless guitars and then buy the game by itself but I wouldn't personally.

Final thought...ONCE you own the bundle with game/guitar, you can buy JUST the game in other releases.

For example, I personally own the GH2 bundle game/guitar, and now I can just buy the GH3 GAME without buying another guitar.

I hope this helped to explain it all...and yes it is fun, and inspired me to take actual guitar lessons!!

Check you local pawn shops also. I bought my PS2 and about 5 or 6 games for around a hundred bucks then bought the GH2 bundle. and addicting to say the least. This game was the only reason I bought a game console. I now have all of the GH games. I'm I the only one or did anyone else think the 80's GH sucked.

He has a PS2. I looked that the playlist for GH1 and I like it. Plus, he is 12 so it won't matter if it is easy. When he masters it he can use his money to buy the next version. I'd rather have an SG or an Explorer rather than a Les Paul. Does GH1 come with different guitars?

Different guitars? Huh? You're just pressing buttons. When my daughter and I were really getting into it my wife chimed in with, "you do know this is just a game, right?" FWIW, "Santa" found our guitar + GH1 game (for PS2) at Walmart. Wasn't a package deal but it was pretty cheap.

I guess everyone has their sticking point. I'm stuck about 1/2 way through the expert level. I think it's the awkward hand position. I play piano pretty well but my fingers quit working when my wrist is contorted trying to hold the guitar. I never was worth a hoot with a real guitar for the same reason.

Well I was trying to remote shop through my wife. We ended up with GHIII. A bundled deal was easiest. If we had run out of time then I would have gone for it myself and probably ended up with a CD and the guitar of my choice. I know they are all the same but the Explorer is cooler looking and he and I are AC/DC fans so the SG would have been cool.

How about surprising him with a REAL guitar?

That's about how old I was when I got my first one, still play a lot 16 years later. Made good friends being in lotsa bands, helped me meet girls, achieved a scholarship to the jazz performance program of a pretty good school. You show me a video game that can get you girls, help pay for college, and gets you out of the house/off the couch.

I'm biased though, I think video games are a waste of time.

gh3 is the best by far. screw what the guitar looks like, its the most fun...and all the songs are by the artist...not "inspired by"

Actually, only the songs that say something like Bulls on Parade BY Rage agaisnt the Machine are actually by the band that sang it.

Some other ones still say inspired by (like Pride and Joy INSPIRED BY Stevie Ray Vaughn)

and believe it or not, the last song is an orginal, not an "inspired by" song.

The party was cool. He invited a couple of his redneck friends over and we spent half the party at the rifle range shooting the Ruger 1022 and Browning Buckmark. Afterwards we had cake and ice cream and he opened his presents. He was very surprised to say the least. We've been playing it for the last 3 hours. Kinda neat on the 51" TV going through the stereo. It's going to take some getting use to the cadence. I played guitar for a year or two in college while trying to get over a girl and it's hard to not want to strum the song as it is really played. Cool game. Wish I had thought of it.
