H1 O-ring question

I ordered the mcmaster-carr oring -458 orings for my 12-bolt H1 wheels, and its almost like the overall diameter is too big for the groove in the wheel. It follows the groove almost all the way around, but I tried putting the wheels together twice and both times the o ring came out of the groove in a section about 2 inches long.

Comparing the new orings to the old, they seem to be the same diameter, the old one is just softer.

Any ideas or experiences would be great.

Thanks,
Scott

could get them cold may shrink up some

Thats what i'm going to try tomorrow. Ive got them in a bag in the ice maker to chill till tomorrow afternoon, and I'll see how that works.

I also tried thick grease to hold in place, but still didn't work.

If the cooling method doesn't work, I may try some type of adhesive between the inner shell and the o ring and keep grease between the o ring and the outer shell.

They will probably be a little too big... mine were... if you have any slippery dish soap or tire soap, rub that on the rim and o-ring. You can try to put a couple super glue tacks or whatever else kind of non-abrasive adhesive on the o-ring so that it seats well between the wheel halves, and then soap it after that. The soap helps it seal, and not bind up between the wheel halves mesh together. I couldn't ever get it to work without the soap and a little adhesive, but I got 4 out of 4 after that.

Thanks guys

I ended up using the-457 rings I found in the garage. After several attemps with different adhesives I ended up hot glueing the rings while stretching them to fit in the groove. I got them all mounted and all are hold air fine. I made sure to use alot of silicon grease on the rings and soapy water on the beads.

On another note I used a 3 inch wide ratchet strap to get the rubber runflats into the tires. With plenty of soapy water it's actually fairly easy to get them
into the tires.

On 8 bolt wheels you can use either o ring but the 457 ring IMHO works better in the newer 12 bolts.

Also I'm running 42" sx2s and I didn't cut down the runflats and everything went together easily except for the o ring issue. I measured everything riot to assembly and it appeared that my bead thickness on the 42s is only 1/16 thicker that the military takeoffs.

I replaced all the studs with 9/16 fine thread 2" long grade 8 bolts and came out cheaper and easier than replacing all the studs. These were the perfect length for assembly but do not exceed past the rock ring. To install them
I just had to drill the inner shell out to 9/16. The outer ring's holes are large enough already.
