OK, so we have this cat, a long-haired Maine Coon.
Gets these nasty hairballs, dear God when she hacks one up it's like the size of my thumb, right in the hallway or bed or something :poop:

anyhow, she's been hacking on and off for a good 36 hrs now, like been working on one but can't get it out - the hack sounds awefull like she can barely push around it, almost like more of a cough.

Anything that can be done to help her out? She's old and has bad hip dysplasia and already acts pitiful so it's hard to tell if it bothers her as much as I hate hearing it, lol.

feeding ours wet canned food seems to help..

Try papaya enzyme. You can get it in the vitamin section at Wal Mart. I have a persian and it's the only thing that helps her hairballs. Crush it up and mix it in with her food. We've tried the hairball formula and the seperate hairball treatment from Petsmart and neither of those worked.

Well it occured to me a few minutes ago, she dosn't go outside anymore. She used to eat grass and puke it up. So I just yanked some from the yard, fed it to her (she gobbled it up). Now we wait and see if (where) we get a lovely present.
At least the house is all hardwood/vinyl.

I saw the title "hacking cat," and the first thing I thought of was Sunday's Family Guy episode. The scene with Peter, Quagmire's cat, and a straight razor.

If it dont come up soon, take her to the vet. Same thing happened with our can and she died from a very large mass in her intestines.

is a maine coon still a cat...arent they more like small tigers?

Unfortunately I missed the episode this week, the first time in about 2 years. It really bothered me.

Have apt scheduled this afternoon. Didn't get any gifts overnight.

This thread is hilarous. I have two cats, but I don't try to get them to hack up hair balls.

I'm not exactly Jonesin' for a hairball; but I'd rather clean that up than have to explain the ins and outs of life and death to a 4 year old.

not all are huge, actually this one is fairly small, just like 9 pounds, and I swear it's all hair. I bet if she were shaved she'd be the size of a large rat
