Looking for recommendations on a stereo upgrade and want GPS navigation and camera compatible. I like the stinger heigh10 but its pricey and the navigation is a memory card that is sold separately. I know it also connects to your phone apps for navigation but I have been on a couple trails that had zero cell service. Would prefer GPS navigation. Thanks.

I just bought a cheap Chinese 7" flip out screen for the motorhome from Amazon. Internal GPS (sygic) that can be updated (it's on a SD Card) with a backup camera.

It works like a cheap HU but both the camera and internal GPS app work and it does navigate fine. I did find out though, it's probably not the best for a motorhome towing a JK on a trailer. I just bought an android motorhome GPS app for the tablet and will see how well that works soon. For a normal vehicle though, it does the job.

In my JK, I have a 10" Android HU with GPS. Being an Android unit, I can side load other nav apps like Google maps, waze, etc.

I would get something that supports Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Then you’re always using up to date nav, control music, calls and more right from the head unit. All my vehicles now have CarPlay and I don’t think I could stand not having it.

Only downside, and you might find this when you start traveling across the US, is cell service everywhere isn't great, so you might want to look into an app that has full offline maps.

My dad has struggled with this a lot in the RV. Downside is like you said the maps aren't always the most up to date. It is nice to have the backup of a built in GPS. Not saying I would pay a bunch extra for built in GPS though, but if it was marginally more, I would consider.

Agree with Phillip. If I was to do it again in the MH, I would have got an Android HU. I was being ultra cheap ($150), really the 2 considerations other than price was Nav and Backup camera. All else was a plus.

Thanks guys, I just went ahead and got the Stinger Heigh10 kit along with the igo maps and a back up cam. It has the android auto and apple car play as well.
New member. Joins asks about head unit and tells what he’s considering ..gets 4 or 5 recommendation then buys what he initially said he was considering….

Fuller that you?

Yeah. That's how I roll sometimes. I was driving my self nuts researching options and the pros and cons of each while I was waiting on recommendations.

jumping on the bandwagon; how do the andoid units actually sound? I need to buy 2 double din units and was looking into a pioneer around 400ish each.

I've been in the same boat for a few years now. The usb connection in the burb has gotten a little temperamental and I want to replace it with a carplay unit

I like the integration with carplay but I despise how CarPlay restricts what apps can be ran.

I have multiple standalone gps apps and wish I could run those on my HU as they don’t require cell signal.

A work around to for this would give me effectiveness of a lowrance or big Garmin but on my head unit display. Great for trails or chase truck use.

Another bad thing with car play is that it’s extremely difficult to fine tune the gps voice guidance overlapping music or podcast audio. I can never seem to get it to work correctly and almost always have to pause one or the other.

Ive long had a gripe that Ive never found even a high end replacement head unit that retained the tactile response nor intuitive use to allow "blind" operation while driving - that even the lowest end OEM system has.

Abso-fawking-lutely! How is it that the (inarguably, the cheapest) crap the OEs can throw in is lightyears above offerings from dedicated "radio" vendors?

Wife's '21 Cherocar in-dash is simply amazing, compared to anything/everything aftermarket

I run a pure Android unit in my JK. To me, it sounds fine. Doesn't sound any better or worse than the Pioneer NEX unit it replaced (the NEX apparently is not waterproof). To a serious audiophile, it probably sucks but that could also be the stock, non Alpine, speakers.

You know that you can download the maps from google, on your phone? The background map is the only reason your phone needs the data service.

Tell that to my 70 year old dad that is in Alaska / Canada that at times doesn’t have cell phone service or internet for several days

But I agree with you as well. Getting that large of a space at least isn’t the easiest with google.

But you can always do Tom Tom. Etc. the nice thing about the old gps that was had was the rv height routing that would auto route you for your rv height. There is no good app for that, that I have found

Until they wig out. My wife's 2019 Equinox had an occasional problem where it would get hung up showing the backup camera for MILES, occasionally a phone call wouldn't hand-off to the car from phone, other piddly nuisance stuff. Asked the dealership about it and they said it needed a software update, which was not warranty, but required a $300 service to do. Big old no-go on that one. Then, one day we got a check engine light for a high voltage on an O2 sensor and the whole car shut off. Wouldn't refire for more than 30 seconds. Towed it to the dealership to have THAT fixed under the warranty. In the process, they tried to update the software as a courtesy, but it compltely fried something. Now backup camera doesn't work at all, HD radio is gone, occasionally the radio just cuts off altogether and resets. Radio is now magically covered under the warranty, but the head unit is supposedly on global back order. According to the parts dude should have it on the 19th. We shall see.
