i have a cracked header. could i weld it back and use exhaust wrap on it to keep it from cracking again or from leaking if it does crack? are there any benifits on exhaust wrap?

yea, you can probably weld it back together. The header wrap is really just to keep underhood temperatures down, but not a bad idea. Helps save starters and things that are close to headers.

The only bad thing I've experienced with the exhaust wrap is that on low speed trail trucks, if your headers are some of the less expensive models made from thinner metal it can actually bulid enought heat in the header over time to burn them out, also it tends to hold mud/moisture in and cause rust issues on them. As far as welding up the crack, drill the ends of the crack out with a 1/8" or so drill bit before welding it to keep it from cracking farther.
