I am in need of some new tires. I am thinking about getting a mud tire but i cant decide on which ones to get. I would like to get a decent amount of milage out of the tires. Firestone destination m/t, goodyear mtr, hankook rt03, maxxis bighorn. I would like to hear your opinions on any of these or any other that i should look at. I am not going to get the BFG's because they just cost to much and to me they are not worth the price. I would like to keep it under $1000. BTW the size is 285/70/17

How concerned are you about road manners, noise, etc? That can make a pretty big difference.

My 35 pro comps:popcorn:

No really, I think you should put a little more thought into the BFGs if mileage is an issue, 50k mi out of my BFG MTs on a 3/4 ton truck, I was pretty satisfied. And they can be had cheaper than your $1k limit, and last I looked the BFGs are atleast $50 cheaper per tire than the Goodyear MTRs. Out of those 4 I gave my vote to the Hankooks as I have heard lots of great reviews, and they supposedly last pretty good, as well as have good road manners. But really I don't think you can go wrong with any of those listed, although I firmly believe you will get the longest treadwear out of the BFGs (atleast the old KM1s I had).

tire poll

id go with the destination MT. there the most aggressive looking and most likely the cheapest. ive run them before. there no swamper, but they ride good. just keep em rotated and dont let them cup and you should get your moneys worth.

Destination MT is a great tire. I got more miles out of those tires than I have ever gotten out of a set of tires.
(I drive a bit like an ass)

The highway manners were great, and I was never letdown with them off road.
(They aren't boggers or even TSLs in the mud, but they did work pretty well)

I've never been impressed by MTRs around here. They just don't clean well enough even if it's just a little muddy.

No experience with the other two.

GCncsuHD you are on here to. I would not mind getting a set of BFG's but it is kind hard to spend that much money on tires. If i did get a set of those i would have to wait a little while longer before i could get a set because I would like to have a little more money. I think that the original KM look better than the new ones do.

siksaschevy and hscrugby how many miles did you get out of your firestones

I would not mind getting a set of mickey thompsons mtz's

I agree on the KM1s looking better than the KM2 in certain applications, but you have a more expensive tire by almost $50 in that particular size listed in your options?

I just got a set of KM2s (BFG), a little pricey but well worth it. I like them alot. Not much noise and ride great. Havny tried them offroad but Im sure they will be fine. Also very good in the rain and snow. they seem to be wearing even and balance out great. just another opinion. good luck

I had the firestones on my old bronco and I loved them good on the road and mud dirt and rocks too so a great tire all around

Yea the Goodyears i just thought of them i did not look up the price. I know the rest i can get for under that. You are really making me think of if i really want to get the BFG's. I really dont know what i want to do. I cant make up my mind. Have heard good things about all of them

Just a thought, these are my KM1's after 45k mi when I first listed the aluminum wheels for sale. The fronts had about 1/4" above the wear indicators, while the rears had about 1/8".

Wound up riding on them another few months until about 50k mi before pulling them and getting the wheels sold when I put on the lift.
This was with keeping up with rotating every oil change, and riding with ~38psi normally to reduce crowning and for a better ride, and 65psi when towing or hauling. And keep in mind it was a heavy 3/4 ton truck.

Mine were 285/75/16, but I paid right at $800 for them, I'm sure prices have gone up a bit, and 17" may be more, but I'm sure shopping around you can get the set right at $1000.

I think that i have decided to get the hankooks i can get them mounted and balanced for $800. I really thought about getting the BFG's but they are about $300 more mounted and balanced. I think i am going to order them tonight so hopefully they will be here soon. I am just looking something that i can just use for about a year or 2 because I plan on lifting it next year

If you are looking for a tire that will last a long time and work good offroad, you might also want to look into the cooper discoverer stt. I ran a set of my tow rig and got over 50k out of them. I wheeled on them several times and very pleased how well they performed. They are also right in your price range. I will say to call around for priceing on them though. When I bought mine I got about a 200 difference between all the cooper dealers in my area on that tire for some reason.

The taste of regret for inferior quality will linger long after the flavor of saving a few bucks....

I only plan on running them for about a year or so. as long as they will last that long and still have decent tread on them that is fine with me. I hope to have it lifted next year and some 36s
