Hi Folks:

I'm new here...greetings! My best friend has a birthday coming up soon. He bought a jeep 1-2 years ago, and talked about going on some offroad excursions, but hasn't done it. I'm sure there's a lot of technique involved in off-road driving, so I'd really like to find him an offroad driving class or something similar as a birthday gift. We're both in Raleigh, NC. His jeep is completely stock, so nothing too challenging.

So, any off-road driving classes (within driving distance) OR an off-road excursion that involves some training, whatever comes to mind. He's single and sits at home too much, and I want to motivate him to get out more!

So, if you got any ideas, please post 'em up for me!

Cheers!

July 3 there will be a bunch going you should join. He can get some drive time & see some drive tech.

gimme 50 bucks and I'll bust the landrover dealerships gate down and I'll take his jeep on their course:beer:

In asheville, at the biltmore estate, there is a land rover driving school.

other wise, do like the rest of us. get out there and get some time on the dirt. plenty of people here who dont mind newbies tagging along (as long as you keep your head on straight).

Thanks for the replies folks!

So, the only off-road driving class is really the one available in Asheville at the Land Rover track, eh? Hmmm...Asheville is pretty cool...I might go with him! I assume it's a bit like the BMW class in SC...it comes with the car for free, or you can enroll in the class, but it ain't cheap.

Thanks...please keep the ideas coming!

Hey Dave,
I know at alot of Land Rover stealerships they have the track setup, you point to which LR you want them to drive you in. I chose the D90 of course. But its pretty cool and you see the capability of the vehicle.. Nothing to really learn though. Your best bet is like dude said and just get out there and wheel. Just take a friend with you if you get stuck. If you are going up rocks you will need a spotter. Im sure if you go to one of the OEV trails there will be plenty of people out there you can tag along with. I dont know whats in the Raleigh area. Hope this helps!

He might be a good candidate for a Jeep Jamboree trip. I really don't think the program/trips are for everybody, but it might be a "fit" for him. They have trips all over the US. Not cheap, but it pretty well includes everything, and most events are more geared to the stockers/mild modified, not the hardcores (although there are some).

Their website doesn't make the most sense. Click on the "Register Today!" button and it will show a list of 2008 trips, and which ones still have open spaces.

contact mpistolpj, I think that is his correct name, His name is PJ and I know he is involved with Back Country Driving School.

he'll be able to send you the right direction

I suggest to just get out there and do it. URE has some easy trails so have him just start out on those and have him work his way up. That is how I learned. I found a pretty active off road group (jeeperz) and just followed them. I tried to copy everything they did and then followed any advice they gave me along the way. I have a stick shift and was really using the clutch alot. Steve (89wrangler) really helped me out with that and I've gotten better over time. I plan on being in the July 3rd group that is going if ya want to come along.

A Club membership is a good way to learn to offroad and to met new people. You could pay his first year and he could take it from there.

I met PJ, seems like a good guy. The plus here is....they use landcruisers!

The land rover school in asheville is a bit different than going to a dealership. You get to drive. http://www.biltmore.com/visit/activities/land_rover.asp

you could also buy him this. its where i started.

join CNC or other local club. Hell if you really want to make it fun and ensure things go well, offer to make/bring lunch at URE. I'm sure you will have several wanting to take you up on the offer...

You mentioned being new, there are several things you should have, there are a few lists on here and on the net about what those basics are... Tow Strap, 1st aid kit, full size spare, jack, etc.. Rule #1 don't wheel alone, that should cover most any issues you will have at URE...

Also keep reading this section there are always groups going to URE and most wouldn't having a problem looking after a 1st timer..

land rover

i did the land rover driving school in asheville and it was awesome i did it with a friend and we both got 2hrs of drive time and they cover about everything you need to know, its a bit pricey but well worth it. plus the car you drive is a new landrover and the guy sitting beside you just gives you tips and advice so your free to do what you want on the course with a shiny new car, i would highly recomend it!!

I've learned lots from my friends in the different clubs. My moto is that it's more about skills than it is about your rig. You'd be amazed by what you could do. There's a Poker Run the weekend of the 4th. There's a few that aren't familiar with URE and will be going with a trail leader. Feel free to tag along (you don't have to participate in the Poker Run if you don't want to).
