I am currently replacing the existing rusted out headers in a '76 CJ7 with a new set and now have a problem with the steering column not clearing the headers, specifically cylinder #1. These are the exact brand as before and look identical but the old headers had been modified (with a big hammer) to clear the steering column. There must be a better way to make this work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Denting them is the best way, putting a small well placed dent in them isn't going to hurt anything anyway.
Do they rub the spring hangers too?

:edit: Though I probably wouldn't do it, grinding the splines off the steering shaft right there wouldn't hurt it's strength a single bit either and maybe give it enough clearance.

looks like the body lift is causing the interference issue.

The best way to shape the headers is to take a impact socket with and extension, lay the socket on header tube, use extension as handle then tape socket until desired impresion is made. This leaves alot cleaner bend and usually doesnt damage the finish
