I have changed out an alternator before, its not a super huge difficult process IF the alternator is located in a nice happy spot like on top of the engine. Now on my truck its tucked down underneath the a/c compressor. And I can barely reach it, let alone attempt to take the bolts off etc.
It has 2 bolts, 1 easier top bolt, and one "blind" bolt that is flush the back of the alternator. I even have the tools to do the job, but to even consider possibly getting it out the upper fan shroud has to come off and the fan/clutch has to come off too. Which isn't too hard when you have mini electric impact that has a swivel head attachment (for lack of better terms), which is what we used when replacing the water pump. But I don't have one, it was at a friends place.
So any tips from those that have replaced an alternator in a bad location? Even better anyone willing to lend a wrenching hand? The truck won't start (battery is dead from the truck running off it), and its in a bad place for a jump. Even if I could jump, there is only so far you can drive on a battery. I know someone with more mechanical skills than I could have it swapped out in 1-2 hours max. I would be willing to buy a case of your favorite cold ones, or throw in enough money to cover dinner etc.
I am located about 10 minutes from the bottom of I-485.
