Help with engine coolant

The other day I thought I would check my antifreeze before heading up to hanging rock for a camping trip. When I did I found that my coolant tank had a brown, goopy, oily substance on the surface of my antifreeze, so I flushed it but when I got home there was more in there... I've read that it could come from a cracked head but I'm wondering if it could be from something else (with my experience, or lack thereof, I'd hate to have to tackle fixing a cracked head). Anyway you guys could help me find the source of the problem?

Thanks guys

what type of vehicle?
What engine?
what type of coolant?

whoops, I got a bit ahead of myself and posted before I realized I didn't state my specs!

'94 XJ (country)
4.0L
some kind of 50/50 coolant (regular color was neon green under the goop)
