I'm doing a brake job on my brother's 88 Nissan D21 4x4. It's got the manual locking hubs. I'm not real familiar with locking hubs because I drive a TJ. I'm having trouble getting the hubs loose from the rotors (need to replace the rotors). I removed the 5 or 6 bolts that hold the hub to the rotor and it allowed the rotor and hub to spin freely but not come apart. I then removed the bolts that hold the cap on the hub and then removed the snap ring. That's when I thought it was all going to come apart but I was wrong.

Anybody familiar with these trucks or a similar setup? Thanks!

To remove the rotors on these you have to pull the entire hub assembly off the spindle as the rotor bolts on from the rear. You will have to remove the outer part of the locking hub with the 6 allen head bolts. Remove the snap ring on the CV shaft that retains the inner part of the locking hub. Extract the inner part of the hub off the spindle. When you wipe the grease away you will see a ring with multiple holes that has two phillips head screws in it. Remove these and the ring. Behind that is a lockring that has a couple big holes in it. A combination of screwdrivers and a prybar should be able to loosen it. Once you get that off the entire hub will come off provided that you already removed the brake caliper.

When you go back together later you will need to overtighten that ring against the bearings, spin the hub around quite a few times to seat it all, then loosen it back up. Start tightening it again but only slightly. These bearings do not take much for preload. Then you will need to line that ring up to get the lockring back into position to put the phillips screws back in.

Good luck.
