I have a 1990 XJ and am having problems with installing the lift on the front. I cant get the 4.5" Rustys coils on with my 2" spacers. I have fixed Rustys lower c arms and stock uppers. I have been told by many people that it is possible to run 6.5" of lift with factory uppers. Have I been told wrong or is there something I'm missing. This is a trail only rig and I am trying to get it put together for Thanksgiving at Uwharrie. Someone please help me!!!

I plan on upgrading to long arms when I swap 44's under it but in the meantime (2-3 weeks) and due to time and budget constraints I was just wanting to use what I already have. My problem is the upper arms are hitting on the pinch welds under the bracket on the unibody and the Rusty's lower arms are hitting on the back of the bracket on the axle by the shock mounts. I could notch where the arms are hitting but from what I have been told I shouldn't have to. Is there anyone out there running factory uppers with 6.5" of lift and if so what did you have to do to get it to work?

You are trying to do it quick without doing it correctly. leave the 4.5" coil in till you have the $$ to do it right the first time. It will not drive correctly the way you are trying to do it because you have no way to adjust the castor of the front axle.

Save a little longer and do it right.

Get Long arms becasue you won't want the drop brackets once you go to the D44s

the answer is Yes there are people doing it..

but does that make it right , NO.

you can go up to 5.5" and notch where the arm hits.. but will any of us suggest it, probably not..

I suggest run the 4.5" lift wheel the crap out of it, have fun.. and save your money so you can build your own long arms or buy a kit..

Trust me I have done a lot of lifts on my XJ before I have what I have now.. I also watsed a lot of money trying to get a little more lift.. when in all reality it was not worth it..

plus if you leave your axle stock and un modified you have a easier time selling them you do the 44 swap.. I sold all my old axles, etc on JU.

just some advice..

Take off the lowers and then install the springs with the spacers. Then put the lowers back on. Keep in mind if it is hitting now it will hit when flexed out.Take some pics. I want to see where the wheel sits in the fender well and how the control arm angles look.

good god your arm angles are going to be terrible. and you will feel EVERY bump you go over. i am talking cracks in the sidewalk.
and forget about any flex...your arms wont be able to drop anymore than they already are. keep it at 4.5...
i mean, you could go through UNF stock if you wanted to. no need to rush

I think thats what I'm going to do for now. Leave the 4.5" and just cut so I won't rub the 33" boggers. I appreciate all the help from everyone, and if anyone has a set a full width 44's and/or a longarm kit they are selling I am def interested!
