just got a 84 ford with a 302 and 35's on it come to find out that the truck has 3.55 gears in it i think i need 4.10s. then i have a bad cluking and jerking in the rear end. pull the inspection plate and what a suprise bo i find the locker is missing half is teeth on the driverside and top what would cause this and would i be better to fix the gears our just buy a 8.8 with 4.10s in it .need in put please help

By locker, and then gears, do you mean ring gear, pinion gear teeth? I'm guessing that by the time you buy new gears, then pay someone to set them up for you, you could buy the 8.8 to swap into it. Just unblot the u-bolts, and u-joint at the pinion, brake lines, and you're done.

Don't change the gear ratio in the rear unless you plan to change it in the front too if it's 4x4, you can't run two different gear ratios unless you want to break stuff. I'm assuming it's 4x4 since it's got 35's.

if i put diffrent gears in and they dont match. and i dont lockin the transfer case (4x4 mode) untill i get the gears matching will i hurt anything.its a daily driven

I wouldnt be putting a 8.8 in a full size rig...

you should have *I think I am not a ford truck guy* a 9"

it is stronger than the 8.8 and gears/lockers should be cheaper for it too...

(I'm not even researching that and just generally spewing opinion on what I assume to be the case since th 9" had such a ong run....but at least I am honeet)

i believe 84 was a "transition" year, meaning you could still find both 9" and 8.8" (i have 9" parts from 82 and 85 but have seen 8.8 between those years)
judging from what you said "pulled the inspection cover" i would guess you have an 8.8" cause unless you pulled the shafts and 3rd member from a 9, you couldnt tell if your spider gears, pinion gear or ring gear were missing teeth.

would i be better to fix the gears our just buy a 8.8 with 4.10s in it .need in put please help
you may have a tough time finding a full width 8.8 with 4.10s, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think only explorer and rangers 8.8s ever came with gears as tall as 4.10. most broncos, f150s, etc will have gears only as tall as 3.73 (unless you come across someone selling one with the gears already replaced)

Ditch the 8.8 and get a 9".
