We've been trying to figure this out for quite sometime now. It's a 98 12v CTD. It's had the fuel plate moved, pre-turbo fuel turned up a bit, 5" straight piped exhaust, pump timing set at about 14-16degrees. The strange thing is before ANY of these mods were done it would shoot to over 1200 degrees when you romped the throttle UNLOADED. It idles at damn near700 degrees. We changed the probe in the manifold and have used a hand held thermometer..it ain't lying it's that hot. It has consumed a small amount of coolant over the past several months and now is in our shop with a blown head gasket (416k miles or so on it)We're wondering if this problem is going to continue after replacing the head gasket, it's just baffleing us. Help anyone?

dieseltruckresource.com has a lot of good CTD info and is free. Sorry that I don't have specific answers

What kinda boost does it make? could be a big leak in one of the hose connections? That typically causes low boost/high EGT..

Does it idle well?like crap? how's the power? Could very well be something in the injuection pump is worn badly, allowing very imprecise fuel metering?

Could an injector be "dripping" causing more fuel than usual to be in the combustion chamber? That could explain the high idle egt....

But I've never seen one with EGTS that high at idle.

I'm not a 12V expert, so no answers here either unfortunately, but another good resource is thedieselgarage.com

Bigwoody, try this http://www.dieselram.com/

If these guys can't help, know one can. After years of searching about CTD's on the net, these guys are by far the best. Good luck

My ford gets 1200* on a regular basis. When towing uphill I've seen 1400 to 1500 and the only mods are guages, intake, and exhaust which cool it.

I would have to say something is wrong with the timing I would make sure who timed it done it right

Assuming your gauge is reading right, you've got 8 blobs of deformed aluminum banging up and down in that engine.

I'm betting your pyro is off.

maybe its the spark plugs, checked those

Ohhhh, good point, I totally didn't think of that!

When my timing slipped down to 11, it idled smoothly and very "quiet" for a Cummins...

the timing is going to have alot to do with how the motor will run..thats has alot to do with it running hot..have you ground your fuel plate or changed it?

The fuel plate wouldn't affect the EGT's at idle though...

this truck has since blown a head gasket and appears to have head problems.

Are you sure you dont have a ford? :flipoff2:

(Only Ford owners allowed to bash some of the shortcomings that the 6.0 powerstroke has had )

With 400k+, I think it's allowed to have a problem or 2.. :)

Oh, no doubt. The only reason i didnt buy a dodge in the first place was all of our trucks are fords on the farm and its just tradition but a dodge could eventualy be in the future...(i hope my truck didnt hear that). :shaking:
