Anybody have one of these? I am looking at one for a rear axle in my CJ5. 33s maybe 35s.

They sound great for helping driveline angles, but I haven't heard of many people running them. Is there a serious strength issue?

How's this sound for fun little trail Jeep? I am trying to keep the weight down.

Running 4.10s

Hipinion 9" Rear
Toyota Front with High Pinion FJ80 Third

Got a T18 coming together and possibly picking up a Scout D300.

$$$$$$$$

Well

Yeah, they are pretty steep.

Currie sells a high pinion, can't figure out the prices from their page.

Truehi9.com if you are going to run bigger than 35's and lots of power. Mine was about 2grand shipped with a spool and forged 1350 yoke. Running 400hp with 39" krawlers. They had some issues with the 5.14 gear sets but they have them straightend out now. I'd buy another one. The Currie one uses an 8.8 ring gear and they don't recommend bigger than 35's or a lot of power.

Someone had mentioned to me that the Hi9 thirds are weaker in that they are fastened by as many bolts...but I'd have to ask them again to see what they were talking about.

if all you are gonna run is 33-35's get some fullwidth dana 44's or a 60 in the rear and roll with it, save that bling for something else. if you cant get the scout 300 with the texas pattern (pretty rare) then the adapter is 500 bucks to that t18 for a regular jeep dana300. if you can get the whole scout i would run those dana 44's and call it done.

a cj5 is short and narrow id stay low and wide. heavy axles will help keep your wheels on the ground being sprung under

but thats just my thoughts since i did have a cj5 and thought about stuff like that

Currie doesn't use the rear support bearing. They offer up to 4.88 I think? HI9 will send you a unit unassembled for less. The cheapest I figured was $1300 for chunk and gearset. You can fix a lot of driveline problems with HI9 money.

The currie hp 9 isn't a 9" at all, it's an 8.8. The hi9 is a very beefed up 9", and while it has the inherent weaknesses of a hp rear axle, it's still very strong. I would go with an hp44 rear for what you want.

WTF???

That FJ80 front is gonna be $$ to build.. have you researched them much being put under other than FJ80's?

hi 9 will handle anything up to a 38 unless you are stupid with the right pedal. anyone who wants to prove me right can buy me one. :flipoff2:

And where did you reach this magical conclusion from? :shaking:

FJ80

Really just interested in the third member from an FJ80. $300-$400 is what I usually see them for. I am not going to go out of my way to get one, but if given the chance... My favorite junk yard sold me a high pinion D60 for $200 bucks so... I am just kinda oppurtunistic when it comes to what goes in my jeep.

High pinion dana 44s are basically free, so I'll probably end up sleeving and retubing one of those. Anybody know if scout D44 shafts will work in a Ford HP D44 (shortened off course)?

Maybe a high pinion D60 then in the rear.

i dont really see where you need a high pinion unless you just want to tell people you have a HP60 in the rear. it sounds like you are building a mild rig (33-35's in my book) but if you have the cash go for it. ill have 9" of lift and 42's when im done and i dont think i "need" a HP rear axle so to put one under yours would surely be overkill, but atleast you shouldnt ever break it, just drag it over everything

I have the Currie hi pinion 9 in my jeep w/ a detroit and 37" irocs. Was tired of using my driveshaft as a skid plate. If you're starting from scratch and you have to buy a new third anyway the price isn't bad. Definately go with the 35sp shafts. I had twisted a 31 sp w/ 36's and a 4.0. Been real happy with it.

Driveshaft

I am not concerned with strength, just driveshaft angles. Moving your drive shaft up is actually quite nice in any vehicle, but especially so in a CJ5.

Eventually I'd like to eventually get a 5speed and a Staak in there (suspect I'll have to do a 4.3 and move it forward). I really don't want to do a HP D60 in the rear because of the ground clearance loss and weight.

ill have 9" of lift and 42's when im done and i dont think i "need" a HP rear axle
Am I missing something? I thought HP rears are actually weaker. That's why you'd use a 60 HP instead of a HP 44 for a rear axle application. Putting a front HP in the rear puts you back on the coast side of the ring gear. Does it not? Is this the case with the Hi9?

truehi9.com some interesting reads on there, they combat the "riding on the coast side" with custom cut gears and up to two thrust blocks to prevent ring gear deflection.

Interestingly enough Petersen's has an article on Hi9 this month...
