Gonna need something to stabilize the drill bit in the center of hole saw. If you can figure that out, it might work with a drill press. I've never had the best of luck drilling in thick material with a holesaw. Lots of lube and go slow.

Best bet would be to find someone with a lathe, should be pretty easy and you can get it exact.

Better off with a die grinder and a carbide bit.

If you make a slip fit plug for the center, it would work, but your best bet is to find someone to bore the centers on a lathe. If you were nearby I could knock it out, but Wilmington is a long haul.

Years ago at Tellico, I "assisted" (stood, drank beer, & watched) a guy with opening a spare rim up in the Hanging Dog camping field.
He bolted a small chunk of (3/4") plywood to the rim, marked centered, and then drilled the pilot hole.
He then removed the pilot bit and inserted, what IIRC, was a chunk of screwdriver the same diameter as the bit... kept it centered in the pilot hole without wallering it out.

Took a good long while (several beers for me, several rum/cokes for him, borrowed genset powering 1/2" drill ran out of fuel), but running the drill slowly and keeping it lubed (WD-40) did the trick!

I'm obviously not charging enough
