I think the electric motor for the fan on our a/c unit has gone out. I hear it hum when the unit is on but it doesn't work. the motor is 208/230 volt, 1100 rpm, frame 42Y. Anybody know where I can get the motor in the Charlotte area so I can change it out??
Thx,
the unit is tempstar. i googled the pt# but didn't find anything. i'm sure it's a pretty standard motor if i had an idea of who sells that kind of stuff.
Can you spin it by hand. (I know it's kinda difficult to get a hand in there) Just about any part supply house will have one or you can buy a universal. Problen is most all parts houses are closed all weekend. At least they are here in Raleigh. I just tried to get a main contactor for my neighbors Goodman unit and there wasn't a parts place open.
yeah, i can spin it by hand. it's mounted to the top housing, which is real easy to take off. thankfully it's not too hot this weekend.
i assume it's the motor that's bad. like i said before, i can hear it hum when the thermostat kicks on. I thought it'd be locked up when i tried to spin it but it isn't. Is there something else, like a relay, that could have gone bad instead of the motor??
It could be the start capacitor but you'd need to know what the specs are on it to see if it's bad. And a multimeter to ohm it out. Can you spin it while it's in the unit. try starting the unit and run the fan up to speed by hand to see if it's the capacitor. If you've got a meter see how much voltage is going to the fan. Just hook the leads up to the output side of the relay. One to each side of the relay. it should be 208/220 volts. (Follow the wires from the fan to the relay.) If not the right voltage then it could be the relay having a burnt contact or something. Odds are though it's the motor. How old is the unit?
ok, i'll give that a shot tomorrow. the unit was installed in '88. not sure if it's the original fan motor or not, though. thx for the help, hopefully i can trouble shoot it.
Yo,
Incoming power may be split on two breakers, make sure one has not tripped. Old units often had two fuses on the disconnect box next to the outside unit. I have seen two 20A breakers at the breaker panel as well.
first, let me preface that my electrical skills are minimal. I'm getting 118 volts at all four contacts on the relay, even the red power wire. it's not the motor humming after all, and I got no response from spinning the motor by hand. I'm beginning to think this is over my head. All the breakers are set.
I didn't have much time to look at it cause I've got to work today. Hopefully I can get home before dark and look at it again.
Here are my experiences with home AC. Sometimes the breaker the SEAIRESCUE mentioned would trip. I could usually here the unit howling with current just before it would trip.
I've also had a capacitor blow. When it blew it was swelled so you could probably just eye ball it to see if it is bad.
Mine wasn't working either. The unit outside would kick on but nothing would happen inside the house. My neighbor went into my attic and changed the fan contactor (i think thats what it was) and its blowing snowflakes now. He said if you don't use your AC for awhile the contactors sometimes get stuck shut.
i've decided it's over my head and am having our usual a/c guy come out tomorrow. i figure it's that or fix parts until the problem is solved, cause i don't really know how to troubleshoot it. thx for all the help, tho, it's appreciated.
