So I have/had 2 StockOn brand inexpensive safes & the battery died. One small rifle and one smaller safe.

Smaller safe was a digital keypad with key backup. FYI, don’t put those I THE FUCKING SAFE…. I’m an idiot, don’t ask.

Anywhooooooo

I’m annoyed with both safes and I’ll be looking to replace with something better.

I’m not looking for a 2000lbs Fort Knox, but something I can manage on my own. I’ll wait until the next house to do that.

Recommendations please.

I had a cheapo (I think it was also a Stack-On) and the battery lasted a couple months at best. After the 2nd time of being unexpectedly locked out, I threw that shit away and got a GunVault. Now the battery lasts several years and gives several weeks of warning before dying. A batteryless option is StopBox. I have one, but don’t love it. I do like the simplicity, I just find it harder to manipulate.

Regarding “real” safes, get a Diebold/Mosler/Garda/etc name brand TL15 or TL30 rated safe and you’ll never be able to break in like that, nor anyone else. But they are heavy as all get out so that’s not something you can “manage on your own” haha.

I also have a FireKing legal size fireproof double drawer filing cabinet, and depending on how much documentation you have, one drawer could double as valuables storage. They are not as secure as a big safe, but still very difficult to break in to, and too big and heavy for someone to easily haul away. However, when you pull the drawers out, the body is like 200-300lbs so much more manageable. I moved mine out of an office down 2 flights of stairs and into the back of an SUV by myself. Same getting it into my house, but the wife helped me get it up the porch stairs and place it.

This. No warning, just dead battery.

I’ll look into GunVault. Thanks

And is it that hard to put a battery access from the outside?

I have a couple stop boxes as well and like Matt I’m not in love with them.

A couple of buddies have the kind you “assemble” in a closet and they seem to like them. I can’t remember the name off the top of my head though.
