Homemade Tire Carrier

Anybody here ever built a tire carrier for tj? I'M Looking at making one, but can you make one to mount on your stock bumper?

You could make one to mount on the stock bumper, but the thin material on the stock bumper is not structurally strong enough to support the weight and twisting force of a spare tire and carrier. You could come up with bracketry to connect to the rear crossmember, and then make some frame tie ins to go between the crossmember and the framerails, but by the time you do all that, you will probably want a bumper with more clearance that doesn't dent and bend easily.

Yeah you would def want to tie in your bumper a little bit better or box it in on the back side. A carrier will put a lot of twist on your stock bumper.

what did you use to make the bumper, i may just make a new bumper too. also how did you make the pivot?

hinge is tapered roller bearings 1"id. with races welded into tube.

latch is a ramped handle that gets tighter as its pushed down.

bumper is 2x4x1/4 thick.
