Pros and cons of running a standard hook?

Pros and cons of running a thimble or closed system?

I just keep a shackle on the end of mine these days. Makes the most sense to me cause you almost always need a shackle for whatever your hooking up to anyway.

Carry a tree saver to the tree and the winch line and bam, everything you need when you get there.
 
I just have the thimble on my winch rope then use a soft shackle to hook it to what ever. It has worked really good the last couple of trips. I used to use a hook but now I have a double winch plate so it’s a lot easier with out the hook to run the rope out the top or bottom fairlead. A standard shackle wouldn’t fit in the thimble of my winch, then I found the soft shackles work perfect. After using the soft shackle a few times I actually prefer it over a regular shackle now.
