I am having a hard time finding a near by hotel in Times Square. The girlfriend and I are flying up at the end of may and staying for 5 days. We want to be able to walk to times square and alot of places and only have to take the subway to the places we have to. We are on a budget which I know doesn't mix with new york, but the places that I have found are anywhere from $745 for the 5 nights to $1055.00 for 5 nights....I really don't want to spend close to a grand JUST for a place to stay..not even including our flights and money spent while there...anyone that knows NY pretty well that can give me some tips? We want to stay in a decent place, but not so far away from everything that we have to take a cab or ride the subway everywhere we go. I know nothing about new york and just need some coaching...any help?

Thanks!

Cory

I have always stayed in Queens or across the river when I went to NYC for work . Its usually too expensive to stay in Manhattan .

Its not a big deal to stay off the island and hop the subway to where you want to go . Then you can save some money to pay for all the fees to see the cool stuff .

If your going to go up the Empire State Building ( like all tourists ) be prepared for a looooooong line . The Chrysler building has a great view and its not as crowded .

^^ this, or even just get farther away on the island.
Since you're staying for 5 days, instead of a conventional hotel, look into an "extended stay" type of place, typically a loft w/ maybe small kitchen (maybe) but no room service.

Yeah, we might just try to find some place that is maybe a couple of miles from Times Square and just hop on the subway whenever we want to go somewhere....

Thanks for the tips!

Unfortuantely, Manhattan is not somewhere to try to go on a budget... Especially if you want to stay around Times Square.

Find a friend that travels a lot and try to use some of his hotel points. We used our points on our last visit and stayed at the Staybridge Suites just off Times Square (usually $300+/night) for 3 nights @ $60/night.

However, food is $$, sites are $$, shows are $$ (try to see Spiderman it was AWESOME)... in general Manhattan is $$$...

Our total for 3 nights (Thurs-Sunday) including flights was just of $2000... And we flew Southwest for $160 roundtrip..

Good luck, anything close to Times Square will be pricey. We stayed pretty close to it over the summer, but that was only because the Appalachian Loft was available.

as a first time NYC visitor, I found Times Square to be too touristy for me. I actually kind of hated it. People seemed ruder out there, and overall the sites that way sucked.

What about near American Musuem of Natural history? The hotel Marrakech is within my budget and seems pretty cool....to be honest, we aren't gonna be spending too much time in the room as I want to be out seeing stuff. But I don't want to have to worry about us traveling late at night on the subway or walking to our hotel and being kinda far away....

We stayed at Dream a couple years ago and it was very affordable and we had a nice room and was fun. Well within walking distance of Times Square and many other areas.

Last time we went we stayed at the Garden Inn in Times Square. My wifes uncle got it comp'd for us because he's a higher up for Hilton Hotels so I don't know how much it should have been but I would imagine alot. It was a swanky place.

I used to work as a consultant and would have to stay in New York City as a result. The client picked up the tab for our hotels, but they still wanted us to stay in "reasonable" accomodations. The place I used to stay was kind of in between Times Square and the financial district (I still don't know if I'm supposed to capitalize Financial District - whatever). The place I stayed was called the Hotel Giraffe (as in the long necked spotted zoo animal). It was a cool looking hotel with an art deco theme. I remember they had AWESOMELY soft towels and bathrobes. I have no idea what they charge, or if it's even still open as this was 10 years ago and apparently New York is constantly under construction and rebuilds about once every 8 years.

you could stay in jersey , hoboken, jersey city, weehawkan,secacus...and hop on the train, bus, ferry or cab into the city...probably better for the budget....and if you smoke cigarettes, bring your own....12 bucks a pack it the city, 8-9 outside of the city...i just moved from jersey and used to go to the city all the time

I'm from NYC. IMHO times square blows and I avoid it at all costs when I go to the city. Overly crowded and touresty now. I've looked into hostels (googled) and the rates are the best you're gunna find. You just have to plan ahead as they get booked. Don't let the stigma fool you there are really sweet hostels in NYC. Look in SOHO or lower west side. Also, the subways are awesome, and cheap. Get a map and don't be scared. Subway's are the way to go around the city. Cabs are expensive. To give you an example on how marked up prices are around TS when I drive into the city I can park all day at a lower west side garage for 12.00. Anywhere around TS that jumps to 40.00. If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a message...

The wife, daughter, and myself went for a week last summer. We stayed at the Hampon Inn-Times Square south on 39th street. Nothing fancy but the price was ok and it was easy to catch a subway to wherever with a short walk to Port Authority or Times Square. Included a pretty good free breakfast.

Have fun!
