how does a TPMS work?

'05 Honda Pilot (yes, an awesome 4x4 ;))...

has the Tire Pressure Monitoring System...the diagram on the dash has four doors (in case you leave one open) and four tires (in case one gets low)...

just wondering how it works? I am considering buying new rims for it, but don't want to be stuck with all four tires showing low pressure...

is it something inside the wheel? something that can be moved to the new rims? or something that I could buy another set of (maybe stick on)?

just figured somebody around here worked at a dealership that dealt with these...

Thanks.

On a yota it is in the valve stems, or caps (cant remember which; but Im thinking caps)

Anyway Im sure Honda is similar, it cant be tough, you see em ridin on DUbs all the time

all it is is just a vavle stem, sends a message to ur comp and says what it is. i know with our mitsu's its +- 5psi, call up honda and make sure

On my Mom's Toyota Solara and the Pontiac Grand Prix I drove, it used the ABS wheel speed sensors, and could be "reset" for new tires...

not sure why I didn't use Google to start with...

a couple blurbs:

The TPMS sensor should just replace the valve stem. I just had my aftermarket wheels fitted with the original TPMS sensors. By the way, Tire Rack sells the TPMS sensors for about $53 per sensor.

The Honda rims have some extra material to counter the weight of the special TPMS valve. So if you put the sensors on a non-Honda rim, the tire shop will have to use extra weight to counterbalance the TPMS sensor. I just thought I'd mention it so someone isn't surprised by the larger weight that might be needed.

if I decided not to worry about it...

The display shows all 4 tires lighted up for a short time only , then the MAIN TPMS warning light comes on and the others turn off . The main warning light is all that will be on . I use a piece of thick paper to block the light all winter long while I have my snows on with no problems .

Thanks.
