I am looking into getting a around a 2006 2500 Suburban as a family hauler and tow rig. Probably going with the 6.0 and 4x4. I go and look at the tow rating and it is ~7600 with 3.73 gears. I thought that seemed a little low, but whatever.

Just for the sake of looking, I went and looked at the tow rating for the wifes 2004 Touareg. It has a tow rating of ~7700!!!! How can that be. How can a 2500 Suburban be rated less than a Volkswagon Touareg?!?!

Should I slap a hitch on the Touareg, and use that as my tow rig??

"Touareg" translates to "Tow Rig". Go for it. Just post up and let us all know when you'll be on the road.

Numbers don't lie. :driver:This is the V10 TDI

Found this on Edmunds in their review of the 2006 Suburban

Powertrains and Performance

All 1500 Chevy Suburban models feature a 5.3-liter V8 rated at 295 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. 2500 versions can be equipped with either a 6.0-liter V8 rated at 335 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque or an 8.1-liter V8 that produces slightly less horsepower (325) and 447 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed automatic is standard on all Suburbans. Equipped with the 6.0-liter engine, the Suburban can tow up to 9,900 pounds, while the 8.1-liter engine can pull up to 12,000 pounds when properly equipped. The maximum tow rating on half-ton models is 8,400 pounds.

Maybe you misread it, Sounds like the 1500 rating

some tech on Chevy's Website said:
Suburban 1500 2WD 350 CID V-8:

Curb Weight - 4820
CVWR - 7700
Payload - 1980
Max Trailer - 6500

Suburban 2500 2WD:

Curb Weight - 5286
CVWR - 8600
Payload - 3314
Max Trailer - 10000

Depends upon the Rear axle ratio.

If it is 3.73 i believe it is 10,500

A 4.10 rates 12,000 lbs.

The power is not the issue, it is the tanny/axle combo.

How many miles on it? Was it used for towing before? Does it have the tranny cooler ( a small radiator about 1 foot square in the center behind the grill?)

The long wheel base of the Suburban allows it to pull great. If you find you want more power get a Hypertech Programmer on Ebay $300 or so. and tune it. I did that with my 2000 Yukon XL 1500 and it helped.

Here is what I was looking at

Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, 2500 Series
Vehicle Engine Tow Limit (LB)
Suburban/Yukon XL 2WD 6.0L V-8 7,900c
Suburban/Yukon XL 2WD 6.0L V-8 9,900d
Suburban/Yukon XL 2WD 8.1L V-8 10,600c
Suburban/Yukon XL 2WD 8.1L V-8 12,000d
Suburban/Yukon XL 4WD 6.0L V-8 7,600c
Suburban/Yukon XL 4WD 6.0L V-8 9,600d
Suburban/Yukon XL 4WD 8.1L V-8 10,300c

c=3.73:1 axle ratio; d=4.10:1 axle ratio.

yeah the "c" is for 3.73 and the "d" is for 4.10
